    dog smell

hello, we have a 3 month old mini dash and everytime we take her outside she starts to smell like a "dog" and once we bring her inside after about 15 minutes the smell goes away and she smells as if we just washed her? are we going nuts or is this normal.

some dogs have an odor when they get outdoors....it's my belief that that odor is from their paws where dogs sweat glands are located. I think it's similar to some people who sweat BUCKETS with mimimal activity...and others who do not. I think it's something that increases with age but is always present. We had a mix like this and it became more noticeable when he was walked or excited....it was especially bad first thing in the a/m. Once he calmed the odor would fade markedly. He was a shy dog and highly strung and very alert to everything around him...I think he was always mildly stressed outdoors and that is why he sweated more and had more odor at those times.

Now others here will say it is diet related and that certainly could be the case....but dogs sweat....people sweat....some people's BO is extremely noticeable no matter what precautions they take....others not....people's BO, changes with influences like puberty, menstruation, medications, and pregnancy....IMO dogs are the same. Some sweat more due to genetics or temperamental influences.

Are you sure it is her because i would think it would be kind of hard to smell you rdog in the fresh air!?

(sorry this is off topic, Gina, but, those pups are absolutley adorable, i just had to post that!!!)*

My two are the same way. Even if they're just outside for a quick bathroom run, they come in with that b.o. odor. I guess it's hard for anything to not stink in this heat.[:D]

I can't imagine how it could be the food when the odor comes and goes.....I'm voting with Gina's explanation.

My dogs come in from potty breaks stinking like 'outside air.'  Oklahoma is not that pleasantly scented outdoors unfortunatly.  Bleh.
I cn have them freshly bathed and fluffed out and send them for a potty in under 2 minutes, they stink again.  I highly doubt that it's a sweat or food related issue, I just thinkk the outside smell gets on them.

Tropiclean has a deodorizing spray "Fresh Breeze" or something like that- works GREAT.  It is not too heavily perfumy and it eliminates that outside smell.  I keep it by my back door.
In all the places I've lived with dogs (NY, FL, GA, TX) Oklahoma has made my dogs reek. Bleh.  Even when we people go out and play, we come in stinking like OK air as well.

i guess that's kind of the point I was getting across, you must have a pretty good whiffer to be able to smell your dog while it's running and playing outdoors!
