Male Dog...Marking in the house?

Hi everyone. I have a simple question. There are many older male dogs up for adoption at the animal shelter here that have not been neutered. The shelter neuters them once they have been adopted and before they go to their new home. Will a male dog mark in their new home after being neutered? What can be done to prevent it? How can it be corrected if it does happen?

They won't necessarily mark in the house. I would recommend crate training or confining him to a controlled area until he proves he's housebroken, though, regardless of whether he's recently neutered or not.

They can still mark in the house - esp if the neuter is only recently.
Limiting access to the house, and particularly keeping the dog on leash in the house with them unless he's in a crate is the best way to watch him, and prevent him from marking, or correcting if he starts to.

Our shelter does the neuter when the animals come in before they are up for addoption. Sunny was two years old when I got him and the shelter had to neuter him when they received him. He did not mark in the house. He was already housebroken when I got him. I don't know how to correct it or prevent it since I did not have that problem.

Any male, neutered or not, could mark in the house, I suppose. Both of my boys were neutered only a short time prior to adoption, and I've never had a problem, which is borderline amazing considering Brown is a marker. Grey, however, isn't skilled enough to stand on three legs and concenrate long enough to pee on anything.[

I had trouble with Newton marking when I first got him (he was neutered just prior to the adoption). I corrected him when I saw it and he has been fine since. He will sometimes mark in other people's houses (especially if they have male dogs).

I'll second that. Odin was neutered just before we brought him home. For the first week, he'd run around the house trying to mark everywhere. We corrected him and he stopped pretty quickly. But if we go somewhere new, he still tries to mark and it's been almost 6 months.

Loki was neutered at 5 months and he has never tried to mark anything inside. Sometimes he'll raise his leg outside, although that mainly started after we brought Odin home.

Some dogs do it and some dont.It seems in my experience that the more dominant ones that come here,neutered or not are more apt to be markers.Some intact males here have not marked at all.If it is a problem you can purchase or easily make a belly band in addition to keeping them contained.Any fabric cut into the desired size can be tied around their "package" while inside.I put a maxi thin on the fabric "this really annoys my SO " but it helps save the furniture!
