Yesterday, a girl brought a little dachsund puppy into work. She had it in a bag, so I asked if I could take her out. First thing I noticed was that she was tilting her head to the side and couldnt hold it up really at all. Then when I was looking at her eyes, I noticed they still had that milky look that very young puppies have. I asked her how old it was and she said around 12 weeks. There was no way this puppy was 12 weeks old...maybe 6 at the most. So I looked at the puppy's teeth...nope, not 12 weeks. So I asked "are you sure this puppy is 12 weeks? Because she really looks more like 6 at the most." She has had the puppy for 2 weeks. She said the vet thought the head tilt was an inner ear infection and they've been treating with antibiotics for two weeks with no improvement. She also thought the puppy was blind at first because she just crawled around aimlessly(which is like a puppy around 4 weeks). The puppy had some obvious skin problems because its coat was awful. It looked like mange to me, but she said the vet did a scraping and it wasn't. She was also full of worms, there is no mistaking that bloated wormy belly. I would love to know who the breeder is so that when people call us at work for breeder names, I can give them a terrible review. There is no way this puppy should have been in that condition, and it definitely is not 12 weeks! It was the most unhealthy puppy I have seen in a very long time. I politely told the girl some advice and that she should check on its age again, but there is only so much you can say to a customer without completely offending them.
