Cat on Counter!!

    Cat on Counter!!

My 3 1/2 year old cat jumped on the counter for the first time a few days ago.  Then she did it again today.  We went over 3 years without her having this habit and now suddenly she wants to be on the counter.  I don't want this to develop into a bad habit!  Is there anything I can use as a deterrant to keep her off the counter when I'm not around?

you can put double sided tape on the counter, plastic wrap or aluminum foil - they don't like the feel of it

I use upside down contact paper.  It worked great, until Scout realized that she could *test* the counter by patting it with a paw to see if it was sticky.  So we had to keep the paper on the counters 24/7. Kind of a hassle.  I've kinda given up. [&:]

(I'm not usually a "give in" to the animals kind of person. I'm more "my house, my rules."  That lasted 'til I adopted a cat who, I am ashamed to admit, is smarter than I am. [sm=uhoh.gif][sm=crazy.gif])

Right now, I've got x-mats up there till I find something better.  I was wondering if anyone has experience with those ultrasonic deterrents that detect motion and sound off when the cat jumps onto the counter?  >o.o<

My sister uses them under her cabinet because one of her cats opens the cabinet to get in the trash.  She says they work well.  At least it lets her know when the princess is getting into trouble.  ;)

LMFAO... maybe I will try one out.  I'm not sure how much they are.  But I'd like to have something I don't have to completely drape all over my counters.  She's only done it when we're sleeping or away, not when we're there and awake... so basically, she has learned within the past few days, only to do it at those times.  >O\/o<  So I just need something I can stick up on the counter that will deter her when she's not being watched, and that I can just turn off when I'm there lol...

    *Goes hunting for one*

EDIT:  Well, so far I'm torn between the CatScram and the Sssscat.  Does anybody know which one might work better of the two?

Foil works pretty good to keep kitties off.  I put it on parts of the kitchen counter, and Teller just gave up jumping after a while.  I had to cover the dinning room table aswell for a few days.  He's pretty much learned he's only allowed on couches, chairs, and my computer desk.  Although occasionally when i bring home shrimp to cook for dinner he gets a little excited and jumps on the counters to see.

Foil gets a thumbs up from me[:)]

I went through this annoyance some years ago, my cat Romeo kept getting on the counter in the middle of the night.  Each morning we would find a parade of naughty kitty prints on the countertops.  He was very active at night, galloping up and down noisily through the hallway. I had a bag of empty aluminum cans I was staring at while trying to come up some type of solution to get him to stay off the counter at night.  He wasn't doing this during the day when he would be caught.  I stacked empties three high at the edge of the counter before bed.  It was the 'great wall of diet pepsi'.  Sure enough around two or so, the cat tried to make a pilgramage.  He jumped up, and there was a HUGE crash of cans.  The cat leaped off the counter, and raced down the hallway to our room and onto the bed.  I sat up, hubby was turning on the light.  Romeo's eyes were absolutely the size of plates.  His tail was puffed up, and his fur stood on end.  I got a chuckle at how freaked he looked at being attacked by the rogue countertop.  I set the cans up the second night, and exactly the same thing happened.  One freaked cat.  The third and subsequent nights, the cans were untouched in the morning.  That was the end to his night prowling on the counters while we slept.  Jules

we used aluminum foil as well. we kind of crinkled it a little too, so it made a "crinkle" sound when they jumped on it.
