    catching a friendly stray

any ideas on catching a stray cat in my area, the cat is very friendly and let me pet him before and rolled over for a belly rub.  I wish I had grabbed him then.  Something other than food I would end up possibly with a skunk instead.

I lived in the country when I was growing up and my father, who absolutely loved cats, would sit very patiently and still for hours trying to coax a feral kitty up.  He used food, milk, stuff like that.  He was extremely patient and sometimes is took days of trying but eventually he would make friends with these guys and he was the only one who could touch them.  This does not sound like a feral stray, just someone's pet who got away.  Just spend some time outside sitting with food close to you.  Eventually you will get her.  Cats always seem to come back to the place where they have been fed ,even if just once.    Good luck.

I guess a trap wouldnt work because of the skunks??

Traps are usually the best way..Some cats are too smart for traps though...You can borrow one from your local rescue group or maybe even your local pound...

Of course if you can entice him with food and catch him that is the best option. Traps stress the cat...

get the cheapest stinkiest canned cat food you can find and sit outside with a good book. Put the food near you. Apparently the cat isn't afraid of people since you already were close and able to pet. Heck you'll probably find out you can simply pick him up and bring him inside
