Our cat was never specifically diagnosed with IBD, but she had terrible intestinal symptoms... as you say, awful poops. And she was a very calm, quiet lap cat.
First, the vet suggested Eukanuba low residue kibble. That did not work. Then Eukanuba prescription canned (can't remember the name). That worked to clear up the diarrhea, but only if I was very strict about the amount she ate, never gave her treats, and fed her on a strict schedule. I began doing some internet research on cat nutrition...
Long story short -- switching to a premium food (Wellness canned) cleared up her symptoms in no time, and gave her a ton more energy. She's not a calm, quiet lap cat. She's a curious, bouncy hellion! Apparently, she just felt bad before.
Switching to a raw diet has improved her even more! We really like the Nature's Variety Prairie pre-made medallions, and for a small cat it doesn't cost any more than the average canned premium cat food.
Good luck with your kitty. IBD is miserable.
