UTI cat expert needs help with UTI cat

Why do I always pick the sick cats?  I am begining to think it is me that is causing this?

I have had 4 cats in  my life time.  2 of them have died of kidney failure after chronic UTI's at a young age.  Now, the cat we adopted in April is having UTI symptoms (frequently going to the litter box, constantly cleaning his privates).  I've already made a vet appointment for this afternoon.  The funny part is, the cat my husband picked out is mean and healthy as can be.

Because of my past experience with UTI's, I have done alot of research on how to treat and prevent it.

I'm paranoid about it and have been doing the following...
    1/2 canned - 1/2 dry diet
    Clean box with unscented litter
ceramic water dishes in every room they frequently hang out in.

Now that I suspect Brutis has a UTI, I'm going to give them distilled drinking water and he is going to have all wet food for at least a month.

I'm trying to figure out why he could have a UTI.  We did let the litter box go over 1 day.  We usually clean it every other day, but this weekend we let it go 2 days.  I know that if they are unhappy with thier litter box they will hold their urine and cause their UTI.  Maybe it's because I haven't cleaned their food dishes in a week.  Their water dishes I clean daily.  I know that fish is suspected to cause UTI's, but no definate answers  on that.  I've been cheating and have been giving them fish every once in a while.

See what happens when I slack off and behave like the average cat owner, my cat gets sick[:(]

    Any other suggestions.

perhaps he should be on prescription diet...and no dry.
I give only bottled water to my pets as our water is very hard and was a possible with my previous dog's chronic UTIs.

No suggestions because my cats *knock on wood* haven't had any problems, but I hope everything turns out okay. Good luck!

I am going to start giving him all wet food.  That's what I had to do with my last 2 cats.

The vet said that it is probably not crystals.   She felt around and he didn't flinch or cry, so she thinks it is just an inflamatin of the lining of the bladder.  Although he has to stay overnight because he hasn't peed for her yet, as he emptied his bladder in the carrier on the way over[:'(].

The vet recommends canned food for UTI's and some of the vet techs are very nutritionally informed, except for the 1 helping me that suggested giving him a sample of NB dry food for his overnight stay.  Good food, but with a suspected UTI - I just want canned.

Brutis is such a goof-a-loof.  He was covered in urine and loving all over the vet and I.  The vet calls him boat paddle feet because he has huge 6 toed feet.

sounds like my Zeus!! He has HUGE feet with 6 toes - fun part is claw clipping time
My cats eat primarily wet food. I leave dry out and they nibble at it but it's wet food most of the time. Zeus is my only male and he prefers wet over dry.
I get paranoid about UTIs having gone through many with my Sadie dawg and I watch them all.
So far, knocking on wood, we've been fortunate with the cats and UTIs
poor kitty peeing all over himself
