Mystery bump.

    Mystery bump.

*sigh* sometimes I wonder why I even own horses! Both of mine are battling something each. Ginger as a cut on her patern, treating with wonderdust and it's doing good... but Kellie has this odd mystery bump under her jawl. It will puff up one day, then go down a little. It doesn't seem to bother her, not warm to the touch, not painful, no drainage, it's soft, not hard. The hair is thin on it but other than that it seems fine. She's eating and drinking normal, riding fine, still acting normal. Any suggestions? GUesses as to what it might be?

    Anyone?

Aww, don't horses keep us on our toes?  [sm=smack.gif] I'm sorry your kids are both having some problems.

I really wish I could help... but I have no idea what it could be.  However, where under her chin is the bump? Along the jaw line (on the bone) or the soft tissue directly below her jaw?  I've seen calcified bumps along the chin, probably from someone using a chin strap (chain?) too agressively [:@]  But since it's soft... i'm at a loss.  Does it reacur in the same place?  How big does it get?

It's in the smae place.. it actuall yhas been there for about a week, in various degrees. It's in the soft area between her jawl bones, about two inches or so behind her actual chin. It's right where the bottom of her halter lies, in that area. (She doesn't normally wear a halter, so I know that's not what's caused it or had anything to do with it.)It doesn't seem to be getting any larger, it doesn't seem to really bother her. When she lifts her tongue, it appears to go away.. it's most prominate and noticeable when she's just relaxed with her mouth closed, not chewing or opening her mouth. It's almost like it has something to do with her tongue.. but I really can't tell.
But at least Giner's cut is looking betteer... what a relief, it's nicely scabbed over with no signs of granulation tissue forming. That' a blessing.

Have you checked her teeth?  Is she eating normally?

She is eating normally.. I tried looking at her teeth and from what I can tell, they look fine. I even pulled her tongue to the side to see if I could see anything under it. That was quite a challenge, so I didn't really see anything.
Someone told me they think it's from a spider bite. It's not getting any larger, but it's not going down either.
She's acting fine, eating fine, no fever... it's just a soft, squishie bump.

My dog was bitten by a brown recluse last summer.  Keep an eye on it and if it starts to show signs of necrotizing, call your vet ASAP.

    Maybe its a sarcoid?

I had a horse who used to get a swelling like that every Spring.  I worried myself sick about it for the first two years I owned him and then realized it was an allergy!  As soon as Fall came the "bump" went away and didn't return until the next Spring.  Our vet said it would be like swollen glands in humans who had allergies to grass and pollen.  There were never any other symptoms and it never bothered him - just worried me!  Here's hoping that's what your horse has!   [sm=wink.gif]

Thanks everyone for your replies... actually I don't think it's gone down any, but it's no worse at all and still isn't bothering her. In fact, she's actually gained weight and is looking great and acting great!
