Must have vaccinations?

• Must have vaccinations? jensw Posted : 3/7/2006 7:29:00 PM The last time Nicky was fully vaccinated was probably 14 years ago. He's mostly lived by himself or with one other horse the whole time, and I just never felt the urgency. And I've never been into mandatory vaccinations, even before being anti-vaccination was trendy.   But now he lives with 8 other horses at a barn that has about 20-25 altogether.  Plus West Nile is getting to be more of a concern here.  I'm having the vet out for a West Nile vaccine, and he is suggesting that I get everything tomorrow. I'm not comfortable with that. That seems like overload for my senior horse who is not used to that much entering his system at once.   What vaccines do you consider vital? • Shirley Posted : 3/8/2006 8:46:39 AM I should mention that I always give shots myself, and I've never had any trouble with reactions. The tetanus, EEE, and WEE come in a combination shot, so you don't have to keep poking the horse. (Encephalitis and sleeping sickness are the same thing.) • Lindsay- Bernie's Mom Posted : 3/8/2006 9:56:28 AM I definitely recommend West Nile and Tetanus. The other encephalities are a good idea if they occur in your area. Rabies is one I like to vaccinate for if there is any occurence of it in the wild animals in your area. Rabies is 100% fatal if they contract it, thought it isn't that common in horses. If you are worried about reactions 'killed' vaccines are less likely for horses to react to than 'live' or 'modified live' vaccines. Might be something to ask about. • Sera_J Posted : 3/10/2006 2:44:35 AM I'm sorry, i'm no help!  Vacc's in Hawaii is very, very different.  But, I too am on the bandwagon of 'less is better', but only to a certain point.  Tetanus is non-negotiable. • tia2 Posted : 4/19/2006 6:19:50 PM I have a friend who's 26 year old mare has developed facial paralysis and a messed up equilibrium...the woman is hand feeding the poor horse who has lost about 200 lbs...not sure if she's going to make it.  Vet suspected EEE but tests were inconclusive.. I'm going to vaccinate this year (I didn't last year) for EEE/WEE-Tetanus and West nile.   I've given the shots myself in the past but with inflamatory results in the neck.  Is there another area of the body like the rump that I can give it in?  There's not ONE how to give a horse a shot site on the net with pictures....I'd just like a refresher.
