A happy morning

    A happy morning

I'm a total sap for nature and all its critters. We have this great backyard that draws all sorts of reptiles, mammals, and birds. They all seem drawn to this huge 40' Mahogany tree in our backyard. Anyway, one of my favorite birds is the Redwing Blackbird. Here you only ever see them in the marshes. So you don't see many of them. A month ago or so a pair took up residence on the edge of our yard that is against a canal. I was THRILLED!! They built a beautiful nest in a sapling on the canal bank. I've delighted in watching their progress.

Then one day they just disappeared. I watched for them, listened for them and was rewarded with nothing. I haven't seen them for like two weeks. I was so sad and bummed out about it.

This morning I went outside to get Gracie's food dish after she had finished eating and I thought I heard a blackbard! huh? wha? hrum.. so I go out to where the nest is and there is the cutest little puffball sitting on the edge of the nest!! WOOHOO! Jr. is adorable.

Needless to say I am so very happy. What a wonderful morning!

KaraAnn, you are a woman after my own heart! That's the kind of stuff that makes my day, too. [:D]

Oh, how wonderful!!  I LOVE Redwinged Black Birds.  A while ago we were @ a friend's house.  They have a pond that is ringed by marshy plants (I can't remember what they're called).  EVERY sundown flocks of RWBB come in to roost.  What a scene it is to see & hear them all coming in.

Cute! We have a lot of them in our area. Their song is so pretty. I've never seen a baby, though.

    Aww he's so cute!

    Singing....
Blackbird singing in the dead of night....take these broken wings and learn to fly.....all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to survive....

That's one of my favorite Beatle songs...don't know if the lyrics are correct but I felt it appropriate....

It's a good thing you can't actually hear me singing right now, your comp screens would be cracked! LoL[:D]

I added a few bird feeders to my backyard about two months ago and my backyard has turned into a bird airport.  I have quite a few birds I don't know what they are.  I identify the robins no problem but there are a couple others I don't know what they are.  I really enjoy watching all the activity and my kids are showing an appreciation for it as well.  There are two or three types of bird I'd love to have some guesses on:
first:  this bird is about 1/3 or 1/2 the size of a robin, white cheeks, brown back, wings, and top of head.  grey underside, and I think black under the beak but I could be wrong.  Eats seeds, not bugs
second: a small bird about twice as big as a pet store finch.  pale light brown or greyish body with scarlet throat and cheeks.  also a seed eater.
third:  this one is about 1/3 the size of a robin, and plain brown.  He almost looks like oak cabinetry.
Any ideas?  I was wondering if the first one is some type of a wood pecker, but he really does not look like the classic cartoon 'WoodyWoodpecker' so I'm not sure.
I have a pair of doves that live nearby, and a pair of robins who patrol the yard for bugs.
What do doves eat??    Thanks for starting this thread, perfect timming.   :))  Jules

First bird:  Probably a song sparrow.

Second bird:  Maybe a finch of some kind? Cassin's perhaps...

Third bird:  Well here's a page with sparrows!  lol

I love bird watching!  It's so much fun to identify different species.  I took my binocs and bird book with me on our trip to Oregon and Washington.  he he..

I wish I could make some suggestions about the birds you saw in your yard, Jules but I don't know anything about the birds on your side of the US. The way you describe them, they sound beautiful. I wish we had Robins here. They are such comical, fun little birds!

Thanks for the links, Leslie I will go there and see if my birds are there.  My kids and I peek out the windows and watch them often.  It's a lot like watching this forum; all different types of birds, and lots of goings on with everyone doing their thing.  It's pretty cool.  Jules
