What STuPiD stuff do people believe about YOUR state/area?

Ok guys you are NOT going to believe this one! I am SHOCKED!!!
I just read (online) through our local newspaper, they had a story about a soldier from Illinois that got killed in Iraq. At the bottom of each story people can leave comments. This is what one person wrote:

"IF IT WERE NOT FOR PEOPLE LIKE RYAN, WE WOULD SPEAKING GERMAN TODAY (OR SOME OTHER 3RD WORLD COUNTRY WHO TRIED TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD)."

I am BEYOND shocked, being so ignorant and stupid must be painful!

I really read it as they were saying it's because of the brave soldiers that we have our freedoms.  Nothing ignorant about that.

No THAT is not ignorant, what's ignorant is that they're implying that Germany is a 3rd world country!

I hear you loud and clear, Nadine. That was definitely ignorance of the world operating there. Germany is not a third-world country.

Chances are the person who wrote that thinks that any country not the USA is a "third-world" country. In other words, they don't know what the term means. [:@]

I thought Toranto was clean, but them I'm used to Chicago[:'(].

I'm in a weird situation. I live in NW Indiana and am about an hour outside Chicago. We get all our news, etc from Chicago unless you happen to find one of the dinky local stations or get a local newspaper. In many ways, we are like a suburb of Chicago. I even have a very slight Chicago accent. I was always irritated when I hear people in Indiana called rednecks, until I traveled to central and Southern Indiana--I was like "Hey, we are a bunch of hicks, aren't we?" One of my college profs calls IN the "Northern Most Southern State"

Okay, I have one burning question about Indiana: What the hell's a HOOSIER?

And we always called Missouri the northernmost Southern State. The racial tension in St. Louis is palpable just walking down the street, pretty awful.

Oh, and people from St. Louis call lowlifers "hoosiers." (My ex was from St. Louis.)

Sorry to disappoint you, but nobody here really knows either-lol.

The prof that called it the "Northern Most Southern State" also said that Indiana is the first place he ever hear the "N" word used in casual converation.

Well, god bless the internet! LOL

Apparently my ex and his brothers were using the word correctly....if they'd been born before the Civil War! Then again, they ARE from St. Louis!

I read most of it and thought: Yes, but.....it sure sounds like it could be related to the Canadian "hoser!" Could Canadian Hoosiers be Hosers? [sm=eek.gif] [;)]

OMG it has been YEARS since I heard anybody referred to as a "hoser"....LOL

we got plenty of weird questions about italy after we visited there. things like....

    did they have indoor plumbing?
did you get sick from drinking the water?
did all the bldgs have electricity?

its not a 3rd world country for gods sake. no we didnt get sick from drinking the water. everywhere we went did have electricity and believe it or not indoor plumbing. [:D]

the only thing that was lacking techonologically speaking were their land-based telephone system. it was OK but pretty much sucked. on the other hand their cell phone system is much superior to what we have in the US. not sure where people have gotten the idea that european countries arent on par with what we have here? i thought it was just the people i know, but i guess not.[:D]

I used to know a guy that had come here from Poland.  He rode his motorcycle, which had a Polish flag sticker on it to a music festival.  Someguy at the festival looked at and and said (totally serious) "Whoa, did you ride your motorcycle all the way here from Poland?"  [8|]

I live in NY and people are allways asking me how i like city life. The thing is i live in the part of NY nobody knows about.Poeple here are mostly farmers or Bonified rednecks! They drive thier lawnmowers to the gas station ans sit in the garage ( where the deer is hanging ) drinking thier Pabst in a can and smiling with toothless grins.Horse crap lines the sides of the streets and its not uncommon for the neighbors to have to chase the herd of goats down the street because they got loose again.Wait a minute, maybe i live in Texas.

That sure sounds like where I grew up in NY.

Now that is a picture of NY that has never popped into my head.  When I think of NY, I think of NY City or Manhattan.  I forget that most of NY is rural. [:D] Thanks for the reminder.

Maybe these will help you picture the country part of NY!  [:D]
This pic is of the farm I grew up on.  It was taken before my aunt and great grand parents bought it, tho.  The house is still standing (barely [sm=sad.gif]).  You really can't see the only other building that is still standing.

This one was taken in 1966.  All the way in the back right (top) corner you can see the closed in porch from the farm house in the other pic.  The red building in the background is gone now, a log barn is there instead.  To be honest, except for the vegetation growing, everything pretty much looks the same.
