Bad ears?

    Bad ears?

Ok, so I have this "issue" apparently.  I'm either a) going deaf, b)able to tune other people out really well, or c) really self-absorbed....

At work I'm pretty sure that I tune people out.  I can't stand it when people just start talking to you without getting your attention first.  Is it me?  Or should I be listening everywhere for people to start talking to me?

My BF always complains that the first word out of my  mouth when he's talking to me is What?  I don't know if he's talking to me or to the dogs or to himself!  He could be on the phone.  If I'm not looking at him, I'm generally doing something and miss the first parts of his sentences.  Or they trail off and I don't understand part of it.  I can't spend every minute at home waiting for him to talk to me!  Should I just stop what I'm doing and wait for him to do so?  And at work it's the same way.  The guys are always chattering about something so I know I tune them out!  This new guy starts talking to me and he talks really softly and I sit with my back to him.  He needs to say my name before asking me something....  grrr...  I should probably have my hearing checked anyway...

    Anyone else experience this?

    What?

LOL Just kidding.  I do it all the time too.  I think it is rude when people just assume that they have your undevided attention all the time.  I work in a kiosk at the mall and get that all the time.  I am going deaf though I think.  Either that or people just talk alot quieter nowadays.

yes but i think in my case it is the way people start the conversation. i think i hear pretty darn good. but when my wife starts to talk to me while the tv is blaring and the dogs are barking and she is walking away to another room all while mumbling, it makes it pretty hard to understand all or any of what is being said. [sm=2cents.gif]

Yeah, I'll be washing dishes, running the water, and he asks me a question from the other room and expects me to understand what the H E double hockey sticks he's saying!

I guess it's getting really bad or he's getting really annoyed with it because he made a comment that I should get my ears checked.....  well I guess if I do and I have good hearing then it's all him right?!

My DH is SO bad with hearing.  In fact just yesterday, I asked him if he was picking up his friend Hub (that's his nickname).  He yells, what, what's wrong with the tub??  [8|]

Well, it depends on what you get them checked for.  I have the same issue with not hearing when someone doesn't get my attention first.  It's also hard for me to distinguish sounds in a noisy room - not out of control noisy, just more than one source of noise.  I got my hearing tested and it was better than normal; it was excellent.  However, I needed to get a specific test for sound distinguishing not just volume level.  THAT was below normal.  My dad had the same thing, and he got a surgery for it that put him back to normal immediately and the surgery is still valid 30 years later.

I'll look up what the name of the test is, if you are interested.

that reminds me of the conversation of a couple friends of mine:

    Friend1: What time is it?
    Friend2: Ninth
    Friend1: Noon?
    Friend2: Yes

My DH does that - he waits until he's in the bathroom or out in the back or front yard to start talking to me and he knows I can't hear him when he's that far away.  Used to drive me nuts until I figured out how to turn it around on him. Now I wait until he's in the bathroom or the yard to tell him I bought something or accepted an invitation someplace - and if he questions it later I just say "I told you about that.  You probably weren't listening, as usual". And since he's not real good at listening [:D] he really can't say anything.

Maybe I should start doing that.  Walk away from him and start talking.  Or wait until he's brewing and then start talking to him from the kitchen when he's in the basement.  ;)

Jensw, sure!  I'll get it all done anyway.

My DH is terrible when we are on the phone.  I have to repeat everything its SO annoying I hate talking on the phone with him... I tell him ot turn the freaking volume up!!!!!!!!!!!! But he says then its too loud and hurts his ears[8|] so I just have to say everything a bunch.  I'll ask about tomorrow or something and he'll say "shes fine" and Im like what the he** are you talking about!??!  He goes "I dunno what did you say".... blah!  Sometimes I ask what he thought I said, its always something crazy and totally off, I used to laugh but its just a pain now.  He needs a hearing aid.

I think Im opposite of you actually, I always hear.  I do, however, not answer on purpose just because I dont feel like it... I guess I pretend I dont hear some things, but I do.

My boyfiend SWORE that I had hearing loss in my left ear. Well, we went to the Health Fair and got our hearing checked. HE has a hearing loss, I have above average hearing. So there!

On the other hand, I have the same trouble that Jen has with noisy situations. I always have, actually. I think it's fairly normal that it is difficult to hear in a white noise situation. I have found that it is the mid-to lower range that I have the most trouble hearing (though my mid range is fine in a hearing test) and I jokingly ask men to talk like Mickey or Minnie so I can hear them. It works like a charm! I can hear a HIGHER voice perfectly, even in a very noisy situation. I think it's because of the way women are made. One of the proven differences between males and females is that women can hear higher frequencies than men can. That's why we fight over the stereo all the time. They keep turning the treble UP, and then it hurts our ears, so we turn it DOWN.... It's an adaptation to child-rearing: scientists suspect that it is related to hearing children. There are darn few proven differences, (besides the obvious ones) but that is one of them.

My boyfiend has a very gravelly voice that has no sustain to it. He is difficult for many people to hear. He has this horrendously annoying habit of dropping his voice whenever we are riding in the car, which is exactly when I'm having a whole bunch of road noise getting in the way. You know? He'll turn away, talk to the WINDOW, drop his voice to a very, very low level and then tell me I'm deaf because I can't hear him. ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH.

When we watch TV I always have to turn it way up for him to hear the dialogue. He knows he has a hearing loss, it's from working with heavy equipment for decades. Even with ear protectors, which he always wears, it eventually degrades for guys like him.

We had my neices hearing tested when she was little.  She could sit in front of the TV and not hear you yelling behind her.  Turns out her hearing is closer to a dogs hearing than the human range.  That is really really good, but she had to learn very early to tune out what she didn't want to hear.  She's still really good at it. lol
