What they didn't note in the article is that a number of Katrina deaths are ancilliary. That is, if someone died in route in evacuation or suffered and died from a heart attack due to the stress of dealing with Katrina, it was listed as a Katrina death, even if it didn't directly result from flooding or missile impact.
Also, Katrina made landfall as a cat 3 and swerved over Grand Isle and hit near Gulfport, Miss. It only side-swiped New Orleans with the "clean" side of the storm. The levees were built to withstand a cat 3 and didn't even do that. Levees are currently being rebuilt to a cat 3 level.
