What does the number inside a trangle arrow on a plastic bottle or any container means?

What does the number inside a trangle arrow on a plastic bottle or any container means?

Some said it's the type of material it's made of for recycling purpose.  I was also told that it's the amount of times you can use the bottle.  So what does it really mean?

It IS the recycling number.  For example, the county I just moved from took only #1 and #2 plastics.  NOW I have to drag it all into town to get rid of it.  I miss my curbside recycling!

I never really pay attention to that kind of stuff on the container.  Though I over heard a caller from a radio station the other day, the guy was saying how certain numbers means how many times you could use it.  If it was 1-2, you can't reuse it, I didn't really catch the whole thing but it caught my attention.  I remember how someome told me that I can't reuse the water bottle but many people do that.  Hmmm......just curious.  [&:]

the number is an industry labeling system that describes the type of plastics used in the bottle most recycling places limited what they take based on current profitability.

Not being able to reuse a water bottle is an entirely different thing.  Once you open the bottle, it is open to all the wonders of the outside world.  Lots of things like to live in water bottles, most of which you don't want moving in.  You can still recycle them, you just shouldn't refill them over and over again.

I actually don't refill the water bottles, I'm just saying that it's just what someone said not to do.  Though I notice how many products out there are now using these plastic container.  Like ham, baby food, their switching over to a nicer packaging.  Many of the container is reusable.  (hehe)
