    Love it/Hate it: Government Employees

Why does it only take two minutes for someone to print out a death certificate in vital records (*if you go in person, not via mail) but dmv takes about four hours of decending all the layers of hell-o, while being barbed and jabbed by demons.  The vampire at the counter wants my blood and the blood from anyone who shares my DNA.  City Hall for a business permit? Piece of cake.  Social Security? Nightmare!!     Jules

Many years ago when my mom was pregnant with my youngest sister, she had to collect unemployment.  When she got to the window the clerk made some nasty comment about "people like YOU..." to which my mom (who was never one to take much crap from anyone) said "It's because of people like ME that people like YOU have a job". [:D]

Nice touch!!   It is easy to assume that anyone getting any help is a deadbeat leech but there are a few who just need a little help to get back into the swing of things.  That is what help is there for!
Hey! fuzzy you live near my auntie, she lives in Dixon!  I used to live all over out there, grew up in Vacaville.  Lived in Sac for several years.   [:)]Jules

DMV = "Duh, Mind Vacant".  I would gladly pay more taxes if it meant better service/quicker delivery from the DMV.  If they weren't a monopoly, they'd have some reason to increase their service levels.  SUX!!

Veterans affairs folks - bless them!!

at my current job i deal with governement employees on a regular basis. it doesnt take much to be nice and courteous as long as you get the same back at you. we deal with people in the register of deeds office and the tax map office a lot, and generally they are very helpful and friendly. the people in the planning and zoning depts are usually quite the opposite, although if  you find someone that is freindly and helpful, i always ask if they are in when i go in there.

Julie, yeah we go to Dixon a lot.  It's only about 8 miles down 80 and they have a nice new Wal-Mart superstore.  Davis is one of those artsy-fartsy places that won't put in anyplace to shop - they want us to go downtown when we need dishes and buy them for $10 a plate. [:D] So we hit Dixon, Woodland, Vacaville and Sacramento on a regular basis. Any plans to visit your aunt any time soon?

Small world - I lived in Vacaville too, live in a suburb of Sacto now, and love the city of Davis [:D]

I spent 13 years working for the feds, 3 years working for Calif State University System, 4 year working for the Governor (Davis), 1 year working for the State Board of Education and currently work for a charter school.  I sometimes take offense to the general term of "lazy government worker" but have to admit, I've seen more than my share of them [:@].

Joyce, I wish I could get out there, most of my family is out there.  Mom is in El Dorado Hills, Dad in Fremont, lots of fam in Vacaville where I went to school (VHS '85).  I have a nephew who is attending Davis Med School.  Lived in Roseville, Citrus Heights, as well as Sac.  I haven't been able to get out there in years.  I am way overdue.
Cathy, government service is very thankless.  A few jaded or lazy or ignorant employees give everyone else a black eye.  I guess it is worse because our tax dollars pay them to do a cruddy or thankless job and when they act like a turkey it's like paying someone directly out of my paycheck to treat me bad.  Ouch!
I don't think you get your 'own' day, so Thankyou for all you do! (or did) as the case may be.   Jules

Thanks Jules - I have always considered myself very lucky (as should the majority of government employees).  I'm paid very well, have vacation/sick/holiday plans most would give anything to have, a great retirement plan, medical/dental/vision...etc., etc.  Like any job, it has it's ups and downs, but when you consider the alternatives, it's a pretty sweet deal and I try to remember that on the crummy days [:)]

One of these days all the central valley CA i-doggers ought to set up a *play date* at a local dog park. Everyone in and around (or within a reasonable drive of) Sacramento.[:D]
