Would somebody please give the pros and cons of each of the above Kennel Clubs.  Everyone seems so hooked on a dog needing to be AKC registered, but I know that even petstore puppies come AKC registered.  Why would someone want to, or not want to belong to each club?

Well, I'd say it's basically regional.  AKC is for Americans, CKC is for Canadians (assuming you're talking about the Canadian Kennel Club and not Continental Kennel Club, which is basically a joke) and UKC is for those living in the UK.  I guess someone living in Canada might want an AKC registered dog if they wanted to show their dog in the states, and vice versa, but yeah, they're primarily record keepers and also put on events, so it's mostly a question of where you live and where your dog came from.

people dont really "join" the club.  They may join a regional breed club or all breed club or even club.  All three clubs serve one basic function to hold the stud book so lineage of a dog can be tracked.  The events are all competitions that at  one point in time linked back to evaluating a dog for type and working ability, to be included in the club.

I buy registered dogs and get them registered in multiple stud books so that I can compete in dog sport.  That is the only real need the registries serve.

UKC does a bit more to encourage responsible breeding with its purple ribbon litters.  Dont know as much about the Canadian Kennel club with the exceptions that some breeds are more likely to be traveling on both sides of the borders.  That seems more related to physical distance than any thing else.

The United Kennel Club referred to here, is the UKC.  Headquarteres in Michigan.  In many ways I prefer UKC.  You can check out their website.

I have Tux (dobe) registered with the AKC and CKC so that I can compete in tracking/obedience/agility/etc.  My lab-x Wes will be registered with UKC at some point this year so that I can do obedience with him as well.  Because he's mixed - the CKC and AKC won't accept him.

Wes is also registered with CARO (Canadian Association of Rally Obedience) - they also don't care if the dog is purebred or not.

Showing is just one factor, AKC is what my dogs are registered with and they keep stud books, records of your dogs breeding, and their titles, ect.  This helps when deciding who to breed to and who not to.

Then, you have breed specific clubs. If Emma wasn't sooooo sensitive to stress and illness, I'd join the JRTCA and compete in terrier racing, go to ground, agility, and obedience with her. Yes, I did the work to compete in obedience. Yes, she understands very basic agility commands. Racing and go to ground are not something they're really trained for, but she knows how to wear a muzzle. She can't deal with the travel and the other people and dogs. Next dog I get, I hope to get one that I can do all that fun stuff with, AKC or breed specific club, or UKC.
