    I feel so bad

So today I went to my parents house. They live in a smallish town outside of the city. When I got there, there was a lady on the sidewalk in front of their house, and her Shih Tzu was being followed by another small dog. I didn't get too good of a look, and the lady was around the corner, loose dog close behind.

About 20 minutes later, I happened to be looking out the front window, and there was the little (stray) dog again. So I opened the door, and when the little thing saw me, came dashing to the door and attempted to come inside.
A little background info - my parents do NOT like animals (dogs, mostly) in the house. When I go there, Sierra stays in the backyard unless she gets really cold, in which she is allowed to sit on the rug by the back door. But thats it.

So knowing this, I first felt for a collar, and found none. But I picked him up anyways and took him inside. He was horribly dirty and smelly, but friendly. I kept him inside for a few minutes to warm up (it's not very cold outside but for a really small dog - Powderpuff Chinese Crested, maybe, i'm sure he could handle a little warmth), and then I sent him back outside.  He stayed by the door for a little while, whining and scratching at the door, but then my mom came around and told me to make him stop - she didn't want him to scratch up the door.
So I opened up the door, gave him a firm "no" and he left.

I feel so bad for him now, I hope he didn't get run over or anything. He seemed so lost, and I've never seen him around before, neither had my parents. When I left there, I drove around a bit but couldn't find him anywhere. I hope he found his home.

I wish I would have put him in a box or something, so I could take him to the shelter on my way back into the city. But he smelled pretty bad, and my parent's aren't really dog lovers....
Good thing it's not too cold outside. Poor guy.

Sierra, don't feel bad.  You did absolutely everything that you could have done under the circumstances. We'll keep fingers and paws crossed that the little guy found his way home or that somebody picked him up and took him in.
