Urinary Incontinence?

    Urinary Incontinence?

I have a one year old Brit named Annie.  Lately I noticed that she is leaking small amounts of urine continually...she also is licking her vulva more often than dogs usually do.  I know these are signs of urinary incontinence, but I think that this problem is usually associated with older dogs...and she is only one!  Does anyone know what is causing this or what I can do to help?

    UTI...can happen at any age.
You'll need to take a urine sample to the vet and they'll most likely prescribe antibiotics

UTI is urinary tract infection (had to answer phone so I typed quick)

Best to have her checked.  More than likely it is only a urinary infection as they do leak a little when that happens.  Better to be on top of these things tho.  Good Luck!

Thanks you both for responding...I was getting worried that it was something really serious.  We will probably take her to the vet tomorrow.  Thanks again.

Hey I just wanted to give an update.  We took her to the vet this afternoon and it actually wasn't a UTI, but her anal glands were full.  I still don't think that explains the urinary incontinence.  She might just be one of those unlucky pups who has a urinary incontinence problem...

Well, anal glands can cause weird symptoms, at times.

My dog leaks more when her glands are full (she was diagnosed incontinent at 14 months, I had thought she was being a pain to house train).

I wonder if it could be spay incontinence?

Yes this is what I have been suspecting because I heard it can start anytime after your dog is spayed (and it has been several months since she was spayed).  I know it is not due to a hormonal imbalance bc that mostly happens in older dogs.  And she was spayed so she doesn't have to worry about hormonal imbalances.  Anyways I noticed that she has stopped dripping urine...so I am glad about that.  But I also have a question about anal glands.  The vet said that they can be prevented from becoming full if her stool is firmer.  I read somewhere that pumpkin can firm a dogs stool.  Is this true?

I think pumpkin will do it but I prefer using the occasional raw meaty bone
