Good partner for my dog?

    Good partner for my dog?

My husband and I have been thinking about this for a while. We would eventually like another dog. We were on the verge of going this weekend to a breeder to look at some Shiba Inu puppies but after doing more research on the breed I canceled the appointment and decided it wasnt the breed for us. I also want my current dog neutered before we purchase another one. (its just so expensive for his age. Should have done it when he was a puppy..dont know why we didnt). Anyways sometime in the next 3 year range we would eventually like to get another dog. My question is what would make a good friend for a Boston Terrier. When i say friend i mean get along well with and so forth we arent looking for a dog to just accompany ours, we want another family companion. The Shiba Inu is a very dominated type of dog and very destructive and we feared he'd try to be dominte over our current dog even if raised as a puppy. My husband feels we'd end up getting another BT or a Pug. Buster loooves others dogs so we have no worries about him adapting well with another dog. We socialized him well with other dogs as a puppy and so forth. I wouldnt mind getting another BT or a Pug but i'd like to try a different breed. I grew up with Springer Spaniels and love the breed to death but I cant seem to convince my husband to. So go ahead and throw down some breeds that are good dog social breeds. Also a breed that doesnt mind cats either. Though I know if raised as a puppy many dogs can get along with cats. Sorry the post was kinda long lol.

I've actually thought about a golden retriever. All the goldens i've come across were just the biggest sweathearts. I thought about that after posting lol. And we want another dog that would be great with kids..we arent planning to have kids for another 5 years but these dogs would be with us till the end. And Bostons and Goldens I know are both good family oriented breeds. :) Now i'd just have to convince the hubby to be up for one.

also maybe going to a shelter and takeing your pup with ya and just picking a pup out htat you liek and see how they are together that way you are also rescuing a dog

What size are you looking for?  And, since you seem to be more open to breeds, what breeds is your hubby interested in?  The first breed that came to my mind was the Cavalier King Charles or an English cocker.  Of course retired greyhounds also make good pets and most rescue organizations will cat test their dogs before adopting out.

I was going to suggest a pug, but I went back and re-read your post.
Ummm!   How about a  poodle, or a poodle mix from a rescue?
Poodles are one of my favorite breeds. : )

(I forgot about the greyhounds.)  I read they also make great house pets and
    are couch potatos.)

Size wise we'd prefer and most likely would only get an apartment size. Due to us being military, moving around alot, and living in smaller housing. I suggested the golden retriever and he said 'to big'. I have  a feeling it will be a toughy trying to get out of him which breed he'd prefer. I dont prefer cocker spaniels personaly. I just never cared to much for the breed. I've known alot to have health issues and nippy attitudes. My husband wouldnt go for the more fragile looking dogs..thus a poodle type. He likes the husky's, German Shephards, ...tough looking ones. We compromised on a BT because it was small for our apartment size house and good with kids and becuase it had a tough look lol. He doesnt prefer a shelter animal unless it would be a puppy because we had adopted a dog when first got here and it challenged me as alpha dog alot, growling, nipping and so forth (it was a dobey mix. Which explains a bit). I'd give the shelter another chance because not all animals are like the dobey. So maybe i'll try to re-convince him. But I appreciate the ideas everyones giving. :) He did state he thought the C.K.Charles were pretty dogs..so maybe we'd have a winner there lol. My mom would be ultimately jealous becuase thats her favorite breed.

Ok Scratch the CKCharles. He would have been up for considering one but we checked out the average price from breeders and it is out of our price range. Lovely dog and it shows in the purchase price lol. We're willing to spend at the most about 700. So lets see. the criteria consists of the following now lol
    1. dog/cat friendly
    2. apartment size
    3. not fragile looking (ex. lahso, maltese, min pin, min poodle, chihauha etc)
    4. 500-700 average price range
    5. child friendly

Again we are in no big hurry to choose a breed so we are just taking our time considering all breeds we come across. The CK would have been nice though. And im trying to convince him to consider a shelter dog/puppy.

Krista, there are always puppies at the shelter, too. Look at Liz's Lenny and her new one, Cole. They are apartment sized and just adorable!

Research the English Cocker (different breed from the Am Cocker) and Field spaniels.  I suggest these breeds based on your love of the springers.

Also, corgis, shelties, lundehunds, tibetian spaniel.

    good luck

Why dont you try looking on petfinder for CKCharles puppies near you. I looked in my area, and there were a LOT of them!!!! You might be able to find one that you really like, and because you know about the breed and know what to expect your husband might go for adopting one.

Also, if you find a breed you like, consider working through a breed rescue. Your current dog could meet the prospects, and most times they're in foster homes, so you get a good idea of their personality and temperament[:)]

The breed rescue sounds like a good idea actually. Aspecially if there in foster so I can get an idea of what there attitude is like in a home setting. We considered a rescued BT at first but all the rescues I could find were hours away in southern florida..i live way up in northwest florida. Chances are we wont actually get another dog for a year or 2 but its always wise to put some thought into what you want sometimes. But just incase we cant help ourselves and really cant live with out a second dog having a prefered breed in mind would help us consider rather than just going and picking some random dog that may not suite our lifestyle. Thank you for the idea! :D

What about a Jack Russell Terrier ?  I have 4 dogs,  one original ( Lab ) and 3 rescues, a MinPin, a Jack Russell and a German Shorthair Pointer. The JRT gets along great w/all 3 and is even getting used to the cats, or should I say the cats are getting used to her. She's a bit rambunctious at times but a real sweetheart and just the friendliest thing. She's small, doesn't require much grooming and sure doesn't eat much ! Another good choice might be a Schnauzer or even a beagle.

I like to go the rescue route because if things don't work out with your other dog (or for any reason, for that matter) they will gladly take the dog back.  I also like that they have been in a home setting where they can be closely evaluated.

Mixes are nice and there are so many needing good homes.  Two of my three are beagle mixes.  They are small but don't act it.  Do you have any rescues in your area?  Have you tried petfinder.com?  That's where I found mine.

    Good luck to you!
