What am I supposed to say?

Whenever I tell my friends and family that I am interested in breeding dogs one day, they almost ALWAYS say this:

    "That's a good idea, there's good money in dog-breeding!"

I just cringe when I hear that. I'm not doing it for the money! What am I supposed to say?

You just answered your own question [;)]

State to them the REAL reasons you want to breed dogs and inform them that it is not all about the money.
If it were money driven only you would be contributing to the dogs in shelters and that is exactly what you don't want to do.  I know you do not want to be a BYB.
Tell them straight when they say that.

Just let them think what they want and secretley spay and neuter all of their animals so they can't ever do it themselves...

Seriously though I think stating your case clearly to any that will listen is th best way to get the word out. Tell then they heard you wrong. you want to be a dog breeder, not a byb. Then explain the difference between a reputable breeder and a byb until you're blue in the face. If you're lucky one of them may change thier minds.

"Actually, breeding will end up costing me money if I want to make sure I produce healthy pups, but I'd really like to do it because I feel passionate about helping to improve and refine the breed."

Thanks, guys. This is a good place to gain courage to stand up to people, I find.

yeah there is good money in breeding dogs... but you dont get to keep it!!
most people are under that impression. tell them its not for fun (i almost attacked my aunt one day because she said breeding dogs is fun- fortunately for her she was holding two puppies .. didnt want to hurt them)

most folks dont understand the complex science involving bloodlines and genetics, not to mention training and making your whelps desirable and THEN you have to weed through the idiots and morons..
if i ever got into breeding my #1 rule would be that my dogs are NOT pet quality. they're working dogs.
however that means i may end up keeping most of the pups, which wouldnt bother me in the slightest.
