    Ticked off - rant

So I work for a Non-profit.  First mistake is right there.

Second, they suck at their Human Resources.

Third, the "retirement" check I was getting at the end of each month for my own IRA does not have taxes withheld, which is NOT what I understood upon taking the job.  My understanding was that I could put that many in a Roth IRA and not worry about it.  This month I decided to ask for that money as a little extra income because I'm flat broke at the moment.  Well, turns out now is when I find out there's no taxes withheld AND according to this paper I'm supposed to sign saying pay me instead of my IRA, I should have been putting the money in a Traditional IRA, not a Roth.  So that means that at the end of the year I'm farkin' screwed and will most likely OWE taxes.  How crappy is that?  I'm so angry right now.  This is the second time in a month that because of a question I had, I find out that their HR skills suck big time.  I'm so fed, underpayed and I hate it now.  The first issue was I asked how much of the "medical fund" I had available because I had a doctor bill that needed to be payed, and again, I was broke.  Turns out they hadn't PAID it yet!!!   ARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I'd been warned more heavily about taking a job with a non-profit.... grrr......

Welcome to the world of non-profit!

Really though - there are TONS of them out there like this. Most of the people have big hearts (or they wouldn't be there) but as a general rule, the management skills are lacking big time.

I recently discovered that my local Humane Society (non-profit) has terrible problems in that area too. We all love the animals, but I'm re-considering my support for them because I've found HUGE flaws in their operations, and they are unwilling to change.

I don't blame you for being frustrated though.. especially when you thought you had an agreement with them, only to find out someone either mis-spoke or didn't do something they were supposed to [&:]

I don't know how to help, but I also feel your frustration.  My mom works for an inner-city non-profit and my dad is on the board there.  They are so focused on not spending money that they incur more hassles and costs.  For example, they used all donated computers that are seriously 11 years old.  You can buy working used desktop computers for like $100 that are only a few years old, but no, they don't think have a functional computer system is worth $300.  Also, I've said to my mom many times I think it's ridiculous that the day care has no answering service.  My mom runs the daycare office and only works 1-6pm, so if a parent calls before she is there, NO ONE answers and they cannot leave a message!  What if a parent had to call the daycare because of an emergency?!?!  I find that really odd.  But those are just two of many examples of how poorly managed their organization it.  I've offered to make them a better website and build them some decent used computers, but they are like too afraid of change to even take free services so whatever.

Yeah, it's awful that because I asked about something, I found out they hadn't sent in my COBRA payment.  Not only that, but if it hadn't come up, they would never have paid another one because they were all stapled together in the file folder under the first payment.  Grrr....

Good grief, sounds like they need a major HR overhaul!!  Seriously, it's no OK for organizations to skimp on HR.  That's a recipe for some big legal troubles these days.
