Racoons--HELP

    Racoons--HELP

This time I'm going to look for experience rather than call the city.   A few years ago we had racoons on our deck so often, always muddy footprints. They are cute but kind of scary, I hated to go out on the deck at night.   I called the city and they set up the cage traps with food...and we caught several of them,,,two in one night actually which was bad because they fought in the small cage, as it turns out I didn't know that but my next door neighbor told me because her bedroom window is on that side of her house, she was quite angry at the noise.  One night we caught a possum .  Eventually I had them take the cage away, as long as we had it there we were bating the coons and bringing them to our yard.    AND eventually I learned that one of the reasons they were there is because I used to keep a filled sprinkling can on my deck..so I could water my tons of flowers first thing in the morning before work.  I was told a coon won't eat unless there is water close by and I was providing constant water. I quit that. We have had no problems the past few years. I live in a cluster home developement but I have a farm behind me so God only knows what goes on there.
Right now as I write...Bubblegum is keeping watch at my patio door,,,every 2 minutes she starts barking. Why??    Well when we got up this morning I noticed the can that collects grease from my grill is on the deck. Haven't used the grill for at least 8 months....so don't have a clue whats in it. But I knew it was probably a coon.  Went about my way, fed Bubby and took her out. When I came in I was walking in my living room and sure enough,,the coon was up on my deck walking to the can. I knocked at the window and he flew back off.  Every couple of minutes he comes back up and Bubby in inside waiting by the door barking at him. Good thing its not warm enough just for the screen door to be open because I'm sure Bubby would be out there.  BUT it appears the coon is running under the deck.
Does anyone have an idea what I can do?  That year I had trouble I put moth balls under the deck..but really couldn't get many there because the wood is so close I can't fit them in there. I know we have trouble with coons in our city...talking to the animal warden last year. He said some people have taken the cover off their grill to find a coon sleeping under it. I would just like to encourage them to NOT live under mine. Hoping for past experience~!

    Thanks Shelly,,,,I will do that...
Gee there was a time that I used to read everything written on this forum...now there is either a lot more to read, I don't have enough time or both.    I would have known that thread was there back then...so I appreciate you telling me. THANKS!

the one running under your deck may have babies.
    just a thought.

This sounds dumb but it worked for me.  In FL coons are a HUGE problem because they can carry rabies (they say 80% or more of the coons here actually are rabies 'carriers' or are infected).

So first off -- don't try to rescue Bubby if she takes on a coon -- SHE has had her rabies shot.  You have not!!  That is a serious-sober-as-a-judge warning.  I have a friend who heard her boxer barking, went out the door and found the dog nose to nose with an obviously sick coon - -the dog and coon both snarling.  In a purely reflex action she lunged for the dog's collar and the coon up and bit HER and ran off.  It was obviously sick (it's face was a mess) so she had to take the shots and frankly her health has sucked since then.  Those shots are HORRIBLE to have to take.  And incidentally -- this was up north (western NY State as a matter of fact).

Remedy?  When I had trouble with coons in my shed a few years ago I just loaded up on ammonia.  I bought like 6-8 bottles of plain ammonia.  And every morning and every night I strizzled a path around where I knew they were.

In honesty, it smells like urine to them and what animal they really think is so honkin-big that it has THAT much pee I don't know.  But they went away.  But I'm saying I poured probably a quart of it over a 20' line twice a day for a week or two.

THAT sounds like a plan Callie...I'm gonna try it.  I have a patio that is under my deck,,smaller than the deck for sure,,,but I do believe I can drizzle some ammonia thru the slats....and I will. TODAY!
I know they told me to put flour down to see where they are coming from,,,but I don't care where they are coming from--I want them GONE!   I don't know if it lives under the deck,,,I couldn't see where it kept going when we scared him off..it looked like in a space on the side of my steps (2 steps going up to the deck) BUT there is no way he could make himself small enough to fit there, as I had shoved wood in there back when the other racoons were around.
And I AM afraid they will have babies..you better believe that!    And I am afraid of rabies...and afraid Bubby will tangle with one. I honestly am afraid since this one came out in broad daylight to come up on the deck for the can.  THAT really scares me.
I will get a bunch of ammonia today...and start working on it.

Yep, we are in breeding season. If there are babies, they will not be travelling till perhaps July. Though you can "encourage" the mum to relocate.

and meanwhile defuse your angst with some humor -- keep thinking about that coon looking up at his dripping ceiling as the ammonia drips thru the cracks "Hey maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan -- take it to a corner ... like wow -- how much did you DRINK last night?  Wow -- you are one great big huge thing to have kidneys THAT big!!"
