Foxes As Pets

    Foxes As Pets

One of the breeders I am considering for my next dog has a pet fox which she rescued from a fur breeder. Now I am considering rescuing a fox, too! This may be one of those ideas that I decide is a bad idea once I do fifteen minutes of research but until then... I'm going to have fun reading about foxes.

Well I'm with ya. I think rescueing a fox is different from capturing and raising one. I would never take one from the wild. I remember once when I was young, I went to a friends house and they had a tame fox that would come around and eat out of thier hands. We had a great time feeding said foxy. But that fox got shot cause someone thought there was something wrong with it because it was so tame. I still feel guilty for that one.

    Rescueing, yes thats different.

Are you thinking about a red fox, or a fennec?

Red foxes are really neat animals, but STINKY. Fennecs are adorable and apparently much less so.

My dad used to have a fox when he was little. It wasn't really his, since he doesn't really like animals, but the stories he can tell you about the little bugger are very entertaining. I think it would definately be interesting. He said that you had to keep ALL food locked away. He said the fox could jump from a stand up on top of the refridgerator, cabinets, and anything else that you could imagine. He also said that the fox practically destroyed my grandmother's brand new car. It pulled every last bit of weather stripping off the car 2 days after they got it.

I think having a fox is like having any wild animal in captivity. If you know what you're doing and can put up with a certain amount of work, it can be done. But foxes, even those raised in captivity, are still wild, not domestic animals. Like wolves that way, but of course smaller. But I've definately heard some stories about people who get a fox and then find out that they are very VERY different from dogs as far as trainability.

I would go ahead with the research.I do not think I would rescue one until I had the proper habitat set up for it.I am sure there will still be those in need of rescue(maybe,I didn't even know there were private rescues for foxes)when you do finish your rresearch, know your ready, and have the proper containment habitat for the animal.

Looking at the picture, now that I look closely, I think those are Fennec foxes, the ones most likely to be kept as pets (but still not domestic animals).

Yeah, the fennec foxes seem to make the best pets, although I don't think a fox could ever truly be a pet, more an animal that was managed and kept as happy as possible like at a zoo.

Here's the webpage of the foxes that peaked my interest:http://www.royalkennels.com/sly&tallypage.htm

I think I'll hold off on the fox for now! I've already got the closest thing to a fox anyway,

I did research on fennec's a couple years ago because I thought they were so cute.  Like Houndlove said they are still wild.  Maybe you can get them to trust you but they are still unpredictable.  And some are really hard to house train.  They mark their territory, which would not be fun in the house.

Here are some links about owning an exotic animal and fennec foxes

I would love to have a racoon!  Or a fox!  They are both so cute.  Bad news, here in NC they are now trying to pass a law that says you cannot keep these animals as pets[&o]  I don't see how anyone has the right to tell people what they can/cannot keep as pets.  I meant there should be some limits but WTF?  They are aslo trying to say that you cannot keep certain snakes and even certain breeds of cats. They say you can have these snakes IF you buy a permit every year and you HAVE to keep one million dollars of insurance on each snake.  I'm sure next they'll try to say that I can't have my pitties.  They can kiss my tail on that.  If you are scared that my dogs may bite you, then stay away from my house!

I looked at the your breeders website and it amazes me how they get along with the other dogs. I never knew they would get along with dogs so good.

Makes me sad to think they would have been killed otherwise.
