Laws we don't need.

As soon as the law was lifted the number of drunk Natives droped.

OT..but just had to say it!!

.
Unfortunately NOT enough has dropped..this is still a MAJOR problem on the Indian Reservations... i have traveled all over Navajo Nation doing injury prevention education trainings with teachers so they can help to better educate children and teens especially regarding drunk driving. I am not sure WHAT will help with this perpetual problem but it is a sad, sad situation...[&o]

I definately agree that its sad.  But believe it or not things are starting to look up a bit.  In my mother's time it was shameful just to be an "Indian".  Many were made to drink just to fit into whitemans world.  Suicide rates shot up.  Abuse rates shot up.  Most Native cultures were wiped out.  My mom's brothers and sisters were beaten if they spoke their own language to each other.  They became a very silent people.  Now I should say that my family is from the West Coast, so they did not suffer as soon or as long as some of the more centrally located tribes, like Ojibway and Cree.  We have managed to maintain our Culture and it has once again become something that we are very proud of.  Its a step in the right direction at least.  The saddest thing I find for me personally, is that I know much much more about our culture than my mom does.  It was beaten out of her and she never got it back.[&o]

Huskymom, where abouts are they from? I went to grad school up in Humboldt County, CA, which is Hoopa country. I loved it there and loved going to pow wows and some of the other ceremonies.

We're in Canada.  My mom is from Kingcome Inlet BC.  Which is on the mainland but just across from the Northern tip of Vancouver Island.  We are Tsawataineuk.  There is a book called I Heard The Owl Call My Name, by Margaret Craven.  It is the story of my family, right around the time when my mom and her sisters and brothers were sent out to residential school.  There are specific references to my immediate family in that book.

The sad thing is, there is a reason why these laws are around, meaning people actually did this.

here it is illegal to drag a dead horse down younge street (toronto) on a Sunday afternoon

They passed a law in NYC allowing women to go topless - anyplace, anytime - as long as it is not a "business".  Believe it or not... Many women took advantage of this law and literally walked the streets topless.  Like, dressed in trousers and heels - but topless.  In the summer, LOTS of women were walking around topless that quite frankly...  should not have been.   The topless frenzy has died down in recent years (thank goodness).  I'm pretty sure this is a law that we really don't need! [:D

We just recently got the Lottery, everybody would by their tickets in Virginia. I am only 30 min. from the VA border, so it was no biggie for me.
Yep, gambling was a big No- No in NC.......

ROFL!!  I think the boys would argue that the law DOES need to be there!  [sm=rofl.gif]

I'm from NE so here's a couple:
1.  In Omaha, a parent can be arrested if his child burps during a church service.
2.  It is illegal for bar owners to sell beer unless they are simultaneously brewing a kettle of soup.

In GA:
1.  It's illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole. (Who in the world tied a giraffe to a telephone pole to get this law put into place!?)
2.  In Johnsboro, GA it is illegal to say "Oh, boy".
3.  Donkeys may not be kept in bathtubs.

The topless law sounds good in theory (to the boys at least) but just like at the nudist colony, it seems that the only people who do it, are the ones you'd rather not see...  lol

Anyway, here's a website with ALL the stupid, crazy laws in the US.  Some of them are just INSANE.  [linkhttp://www.crazylaws.com/]http://www.crazylaws.com/[/link]

It's not a law I don't think but a policy...but I always laugh when I go to dog shows and it's in a building with big NO DOGS ALLOWED signs on it. [sm=lol.gif]
