2'' of snow and the half the region shuts down!

Sheesh! We got a little less than 2'' of snow yesterday, and schools all over the NOVA and southern MD area are shut down! The news said it's because VDOT (VA dept. of transportation) doesn't salt the subdivision roads with less than 2'' and it's supposed to get to 40 degrees today. It's our first snow of the season and I kept telling my DH yesterday they were going to freak out and close schools and he kept saying "nahhh". You Alaska people must think we're wimps! (well, not ME, I think there should be school!).

ROFL!! Ah memories. I lived in Baltimore until high school. I do remember many days that school was cancelled. I specifically remember a day that they cancelled school for a storm that only hit the Eastern shore. Baltimore received no snow. I also remember how when a storm was coming, the grocery stores were packed. My parents who were used to driving in snow from living in Buffalo, were horrified at how many people could not drive in it. It took us 2 1/2 hours to return from the mall one year.

I am so sorry that school was cancelled. Last week, our school system in San Angelo Texas, had school be 2 hours late and then once I had gotten my sons to school, I got a call 30 minutes later saying that school was closing in an hour!!!

Yeah, I always thought it was funny when I lived in Virginia Beach, a dusting of snow and everything closed.  But they had only minimal equipment and used sand, not salt and couldn't keep up with ice & snow like us Michiganders!

LOL!!  When we lived in Roanoke, Virginia I always thought it was funny that they threatened snow and the schools would let out early.  I can remember a few days in 1 year that they got out of school b/c they were talking snow & then we didn't get anything (not even a dusting).  Growing up in Nebraska, I only wished they would have done that when we were in school.  Heck, most of the time it would snow pretty good & we still had to go to school.

BF is from Alaska and he hates the snow, thats why he moved to New Mexico in the first place. Now, with the weather being so strange lately we have gotten a record breaking amount of snow, it hasen't snowed here in the last 5 or more years. This mornig I wake up to look outside to to see snow! Of corse, BF stoped complaining when he heard that his college was closed for the day, means he can sleep in.[:)]

Where in New Mexico are you? I know some parts of NM get snow almost every winter.

Hey, didn't any of you wish for snow and a day or two out of school when you were in school, especially elementary school?  i grew up in East Texas and every couple of years we would get snow/ice or just snow and school would be closed.  BUT i lived on the edge  a little town and the buses picked up most of the kids way out on dirt roads.  Just flat was not safe to drive those buses on those frozen, slick, ice/snow covered dirt roads.Highways in the area  were bad enough (2 lane highways), but those tiny narrow roads--not safe at all.  And us KIDS LOVED IT.

My boys gew up in Austin and every once in a while schools were closed for snow--and they loved it..  If there was even a hint that we would get snow i had to stock up on canned milk for snow ice cream, cocoa for hot cocoa, supplies for making chili, etc.

I'm sorta in the southern central part of NM, In northern NM they get a whole lot of snow during this time, like in Colorado but where I'm at we hardly get any at all. It's more like Arizona type weather. We have a variety of landscapes in NM everything for dense green forset to dry dusy deserts, I live in the dry desert part.

    Hey I'm at work today...

Honestly though, the kids get a delay or a cancellation because of the risk of ice.  If one child gets injured or killed because of an avoidable accident, the school systems will be sued beyond belief.

The same thing happens here.  It snows an inch or two and most of the surrounding counties cancel school.  Knox County rarely cancels school, though.  The kids here in the city go to school in the snow, while their rural counterparts get to sleep in.

I've always thought it was kind of funny how some places cancel school and all of that for such a small amount of snow. I guess they're not used to it, so that counts for something, I suppose. Even Arizona's getting snow this year....but then some parts get snow a lot. One year we were in Flagstaff and it snowed about 2 feet!

It got up to 40 degrees or so yesterday, everything was melted and then salted on top of that . . . and they had a TWO HOUR DELAY for public school today!!!!! There's barely any snow on the ground!!! I imagine that there are some backroads that maybe, perhaps, if they were completely covered by tree branches, were still covered in the less than two inches of snow we got two days ago. There's no ice, never was in this part of VA, just a nice powdery snow. It doesn't affect me since my kid goes to a private school that was on schedule today, but I really do feel for parents that work, and especially around here that have to commute and leave early, that must be extremely difficult.

On top of the schools being canceled yesterday, they also closed a major interstate for a 200 miles strech south of where I live.  They just re-opened them this morning but wow, no one could travel south yesterday because of a few inches of snow.
