THIS is why I walk

A relatively young woman who I know is bedridden this week. She has recurring/remitting MS. She can NOT get out of bed. She can NOT feed herself. She can NOT move. This is a 46 year old woman. Her MS meds have stopped working. She is completely and totally helpless. Her husband is home with her this week....her young adult children will come home NEXT week if need be so dad can go back to work. Last week she was painting her livingroom and hanging new curtains. This week she is totally bedridden.

THIS is the face of MS.

And this is why I walk.

Oh, absolutely, you've got 'em.

I work in MRI and I see the sudden blindness, loss of motion, etc. in young people, lesions on the back. A very scary condition and I wish I could of donated more!

Thanks Lori. 87 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to patient services, so whatever folks can give is appreciated.

This gal scares me....my sister is 12 years older than she is....is that what's in store for Sis if a cure isn't found?

It is terrible. My Aunt suffers from MS. She is 32 years old and can not move at this time. She is so down, she has 2 young children and can not be there for them right now.

Well, not necessarily, I'm sure you know it affects everyone differently. I've seen people who are young really effected by it with lots of symptoms and then some older ones who live pretty normal lives. It all depends.

And I'm hoping that Sis's physical fitness, her determination to keep moving and her attitude will keep her moving for many many years. But to actually see this really vibrant woman totally helpless, well that took the wind out of my sails big time. She even has to have a cathader cuz she can't get to the bathroom, even with help.

One of those kinds of things that you just say "there but for the Grace of God....."

And maybe by sharing HER story, folks will realize why I'm such a passionate pain in the rear about reaching my goal!

Oh, sure, it's definitely a very worthy cause, there are lots whose lives are effected very badly by it. I wish your sister only the best.

...what a sad story, very scary too.
Right after I gave you my meager donation my sister's boyfriend was diagnosed with MS. he's just a college kid and has started the meds. i know it's more common in females so I was surprised to hear the news of him. It just shows that it can strike when you least expect it.

Wow Sierra - that is heartbreaking. I can't imagine what it's been like for you and your family and I'm really disappointed to think that not one of these organizations was willing to help. Especially with something as basic and necessary as a wheelchair. Have you been able to purchase one yet? That's what I think so many of us don't realize. It's not just about the disease and the pain, but the financial hardship on top of all that too. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Gosh that stinks, and I'm really sorry to hear this. I cant comment on the Canadian MS Society, but golly, I do know that THIS one bends over backwards to help those afflicted. Wheel chairs, ramps, lifts for vehicles...even help getting a vehicle that will allow them to drive. I'm sorry for your Dad and my prayers go out to him.
