Sociological Movies?

    Sociological Movies?

I have a paper due in my Sociology Through Film and Literature class on Thursday.  It won't take me long at all to write but I need a movie to write about.  Things we have done in class are:
V for Vendetta/Economic Thoughts of George Orwell
American History X/Ethnicity, Identity, and Ideology
Boys Don't Cry/Gender and Genitals:Constructs of Sex and Gender
There are quite a few more, but that gives an idea of what I'm looking for.  We have to watch a movie and then find an article to go with the sociological theme.  I'm trying to use a movie I have.  Right now, I have Monster which could go with something about abuse and actions later in life.  8 Mile along with something about race what is normally expected of each race.  I have to go look and see what other movies I have.  Any ideas on other movies or themes?

Well, Lord of the Flies is a book, but there's a movie, too.

I wrote my MA dissertation on Baise-Moi. There are some others I think are fun to write about (usually in regard to gender issues, sexuality, sexual assault, class, postcolonial and queer theory, etc.): But I'm A Cheerleader, Saved!, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Chinatown, Morocco, Rebecca, The Fat Girl (À ma soeur!), Romance, Set Me Free (Emporte-moi), Irréversible, I Stand Alone (Seul contre tous), The Legend of Billy Jean, any of François Ozon's films .....

Actually, Saved is one we did in class.  I haven't done the assignment yet, but it is due on Thursday.

Another excellent movie about racism is "The Human Stain" with Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The character was african-american with anglo color and features and had passed as a white man for all of his adult life. And it all came to a head, late in life, as he revealed to his co-workers what his real ethnicity was, in response to some entrenched racism on their part.

Of Mice and Men is a good movie/book to do...the old movie not the new one...or, Grapes of Wrath, honestly I think everyone will be doing a race/gender paper, do one from one of the classics...it will show your professor you are well read and not stuck in the Mtv generation...

Or, for that matter, "Proof," another Sir Anthony Hopkins movie.

I'm a big fan of the movie "The Mission" with DeNiro.  Great movie with some interesting sociological/psychological implications, as well as moral dilemma.  Jeffery Lyons is in it as well.

"The Last Castle" with Robert Redford, another interesting movie, with multiple sociologies within a fairly homogenous group.  And a good movie as well.

"The Last Samurai" Great movie showing the clash of two cultures, how they are similar and yet so different.

"The Terminal" How one man creates a life for himself within an airport terminal.  An amazing story, very well done.

Any of the Akira Kurosawa films but especially Seven Samurai and Ran.

How about some of the classic Disney movies?

    Pocahontas
    The Hunchback of Notre Dame
    Mulan

[:D] Ok, so I am a huge foreign and independent film fan so I would have to say

Transamerica” -  a man who is seeking a sex change operation and right before the operation finds out he is a father of a teenage boy that comes to live with him.
    INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!!

    OR

“Walk on Water” an Israeli film with partial subtitles that deals with all types of intolerance including race and sexual intolerance.  It is actually a drama/ action type film about a Israeli secret service agent hired to assassinate a 90 year old Nazi War criminal but in order to do so he must pretend to be a tour guide and befriend the guys grandkids.
    AMAZING FILM!!!

    OR

The Sea Inside” which is based on a true story of a man in Spain who was a quadriplegic after a diving injury and he fought for 30 years to have some assist him with suicide since he could not end his life himself.  This is fully subtitled  but such a powerful film.

All 3 of these movies are currently available at Hollywood and Blockbuster as fairly new releases so they should be easy to find.
