How do you know your child is a future animal lover?

How do you know your child is a future animal lover?

To all that have kids (and those who dont) I just wanted to share these little stories about my baby boy. Im sure he is going to grow up to be a wonderful animal lover just like his mommy.

It was very clear to me that he was going to be an animal lover when one of his first words was 'Laika'. He wasnt even saying Mommy! Its so sweet everytime he sees a dog he yells Laika! Laika!

My second clue came when Ceci was introduced into our home. He is not the regular kid with her. Hes gentle and doesnt hit or abuse her in anyway. Yesterday for the first time Ceci curled up next to us and he just lay there half asleep with his little hand on her throat.

But my third and final clue was yesterday night when we went to his new babysitters house. They have a tiny 4 week old orphaned Chihuahua. He stroked that little baby so gentle, and actually picked him up oh so gently and brought him over to me, then kissed his little head.

Ive never met a child so young and so gentle!

But anyway, how did you know your child was going to be an animal lover?

I don't have kids, but my mom has pics of me as a toddler sitting on the floor next to our first dog's bowl taking the kibbles out of the bowl and hand feeding him--thankfully Aladdin was not a resource guarder.....

I've always loved horses too--when I was 4 I snuck over to our neighbor's yard, climbed their gate, and climbed ONTO their pony Thunder, who didn't even have a halter on and hadn't been riden in forever.  Thunder just ambled around the paddock until mom found me, freaked out, and had to wade out into the muddy paddock in her dress clothes....

You can just tell!  Of my 2 boys, 1 is an absolute nutjob animal lover like me.   The other is just on the bandwagon, so to speak.  It's not in his soul, he doesn't have the passion - although he is very kind to animals and shows respect, he's not feeling it.

lol!   So cute.  Yes I think you have a little animal lover there!

My first word was "dog".   Didnt even own one.  My mom said we were in the car and I pointed and said it... and the way she says I said it is more like "douge".  But Im an animal lover thats for sure.[:)

Julitza, your son sounds like a future animal rescuer.  Wow.  That's a great story.  I'm very proud of the little guy, picking up a chi baby and giving it a kiss on the head.  Keep fostering that love and you might have a future "dog whisperer" on your hands.  (But in a non-contreversial way [:)])

No kids here either; when I was little I used to terrorize the barn cats. [8|] Of course I also begged for a dog for a year or two before we got Oreo on my 10th BDay and I started riding horses when I was 2...my parents even introduced me to our horses before they took me into the house for the first time! [:D]

Awww...your little boy sounds like such a sweet little kid[;)]

No kids here, but almost every picture of me as a child was me and some animal.  I think I scared my parents more than they needed, I would just pick up anything that crawled from snakes and grasshoppers to anything fuzzy.  What was even great was my parent feed me what I wanted and allowed me to have whatever pet set foot into my life.  I don't think there was ever a time in my life that I didn't have a pet of some kind.

My mom knew when she caught me, at age 3, patting a dead mouse.

    Oh my god, that's me!!!
I was that very same age too!
I've told this story before, but in a different section, so I'll tell it again.
I was 3 when I learned about death. I learned about death because my babysitter at the time used to have a cat that did the typical leave-a-dead-mouse-on-the-back-porch-thing. I would go outside when my mom would come to pick me up. She would stay inside and talk to the sitter. Anyway, I didn't know about death and I'd find these mice and simply think they were injured. I remember thinking in my little 3 year old head that these mice would get better as long as I could get them back to their mothers.
One day I put one in my pocket and brought it home. We got into the garage and I took it out of my pocket and my mother saw it and freaked out. She started yelling saying that the mouse wasn't injured, it was dead and it wouldn't be able to go back to its mother. I was SO upset and bawled.

That is how I learned about death.

Stephen is 5 years old and he loves my dogs. He always wants to feed them when it comes to mealtimes, he will play fetch with Cassidy and Mirelle, and he loves to lay down next to them on the ground. He even falls asleep snuggling with the dogs. It's so cute [:)] I have several pictures of him with Cassidy, hugging her or whatever. He calls them cute nicknames that he makes up, and likes to let them lick him all over too. I'm sure he'll get a dog when he gets older! [:)]

    OMg that is hilarious!

I remember as a kid I had tons of animals. I remember I had a thing for white ones. I had a pair of albino mice (or gerbils), a white bunny, and a little mutt. I always had some kind of animal.

I remember I used to save my change until I had enough to buy a hampster and mom would always have to shell out the money for the food, toys and bedding [:)]

My sister and I have always been around animals, but I am definitely more of an animal person.  She could take 'em or leave 'em.  I can't live without them!  I got my first pony when I was 4 for Christmas.  I don't remember not having dogs.  I was always trying to train them to do agility.  I would set up horse jumps as low as possible...I'm not sure how I moved those big rails since I was only about 6, but I did.  I was always exercising my pony and grooming her.  ALWAYS!  My sister, on the other hand, thought her hair would look better shorter and cut her tail(which dragged the ground) up to the bone and left about an inch of mane and forelock.  She was much more concerned with fashion...hair cuts for my pony, and dressing the poor cats which just layed limp when she picked them up.  I was always trying to talk to them and make sure they were happy.  There was definitely a huge difference between my sister and I!

The biggest thing that scares me about having children is the possibility that they could grow up disliking animals. That and pet allergies.

My first word was doggie, and I also didn't own one. I've also always wanted to be a vet (still chasing that dream today) and I've always longed to show dogs. I finally got my wish to show dogs fulfilled by my current little boy, but the vet thing is going to take longer :).

Well I know my brother's daughter is an animal lover and she is 1yrs old. Her first word was Blue, then ocha (Mocha), and then she said Daddy. She loves to give Blue hugs and stroke him even does this to her stuff animals.  In fact all her present for christmas are animal related since she loves to watch animal planet and anything with animals.

My mom knew she had an animal lover on her hands when I was 1 year old picking up snakes in the yard to bring home. She hated it since she hates snakes so she would have to pry the things out of my hands since I wouldn't let them go. Not to mention the animals I would bring home and keep. Even tried to keep the next door neighbors dog since they maded him live outside with no shelter and hardly fed him when I was 7.
