Why does my puppy throw up?

Why does my puppy throw up?

Hi, I have a 4 month old schnoddle.  He is a great pup and has no health problems. We have had him to the vet for all of his shots and worming.  He weighs about 8 pounds.  Anyway I feed him about a cup and a half per day. I feed him two times a day so he won't eat to much at once.  He doesn't always eat all of his food. Several times usually when he is excited, or nervous about us leaving he will throw up.  He seems fine after, but I worry if there is something wrong. He knows when we are getting ready to leave because he will run throuh the house and under our feet. Is this something to be concerned about? I have never had this problem before and don't know what to do.  Any suggestions??? I am home with him all day so it's not like we leave him often. He has also thrown up for no apparent reason.

What is puppy vomiting?  Is it bile, or his food?  Better get some bloodwork done, could possibly have a kidney problem. Or could have sensitive tummy, food too rich?

I feed him Iams puppy food.  He throws up undigested puppy food. It looks like it hasn't been chewed.  It's hard to tell, but it is his food.

Maybe try a different puppy food. Some dogs just don't do well on a certain food. My dog use to throw up A LOT when she was a puppy. I switched to a higher quality premium dog food and the problem fixed itself. I would recommend a food without byproducts, artificial colors, or fillers. If you search around the nutrition threads, you'll find a lot of food reccomendations.

Also do not give him/her rawhide.  Rawhide "clogs" the digestive tract and can cause vomiting and even more serious issues.

I would also check out the nutrition page.  There are foods out there that are way better than Iams.  For sensitive tummies I recommend Sensible Choice and California Natural.

My puppy is had the same problems. We gave him soft food, and it stopped.

If he's only 4 months old, and especially since he's a smaller breed dog, I would suggest feeding him three times a day instead of two, if that's possible. Then it would be easier for him to digest, like you said.  I have large breed dogs, and I fed them 3 times a day until they are 6 months old. I think it's more important for a smaller breed dog to be fed in smaller meals more frequently.

Iams is not the best food choice, i fed iams "way back when" and my dogs did horrible on it, threw up after each meal, it was awful...try looking around for a better quality food....the only diet i will ever suggest is raw, but you need to find a diet that is best suited for your dog AND their health
