Does anyone sew?

    Does anyone sew?

I'm in the process of making Halloween costumes and I'm having problems making my sons [link;page=6]costume[/link].>http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M3306.htm?tab=costumes&;page=6]costume[/link]. I'm having problems with the elastic. The pattern gives the measurements for the elastic but they totally do not fit on the material. It mentions nothing of making gathers to fit the elastic and the costume is coming out horrible. Needless to say I had to stop for the day before I flip out. Now either I'm doing it wrong or the pattern is wrong. Anyone ever have this problem?

I mostly just keep to simple patters because I'm no pro at sewing but there are times that I still get fustrated.  Many time I just forget about the pattern and make up my own thing and hope it works out alright.

Your son is sure lucky though, to have such a uique costume.[;)]  I hope you figure out your little thing soon, I'm sure it's all going to look great once it's all together.

My sewing machine is being stored in the barn right now. :-P

Anyway, what you do is sew one end of the elastic to one opening in the seam, and slide the fabric over it. Yes, it has to gather. Then you sew the other end and VOILA!

    I hope this helps!

Pin one end of the elastic to one side, then pin to the other side.  Put your machine needle into the first side and stretch everything until it fits, and start sewing with a zig zag stitch (but a straight stitch may work also), keeping it stretched.  When you reach the other side....voila...it's all gathered up nicely!

Both Jean and Marty_ga have good ideas.  If it's a hole that the elastic fits in, then you can slide it through, stitch the ends of the elastic together and then hand sew the hole shut.  but it really depends on how the pattern is designed and stuff.  I didn't see on the link where it talks about how the gathers are done.

Most costumes, doll clothes, etc are done the easy, quick way...not involving running the elastic through a premade hem.  Been there many a time...[;)]

Nevermind. I figured it out. There is a casing that I had to stitch on there but it seems the casing is too small for the elastic. I'm going to have to take it all apart and jazz it up. I'm kinda mad about that but the costume is a bit too big on him so I have to alter it anyways. Sometimes I wish I would've just taken him to the costume store and let him pick one out. Thanks for your help everyone. [:D]

You can still just forget about using a casing, and do it as I suggested.  I agree that it seems like a lot of work to make something like that.  I just know you'll post pics of it...smile!
