I didn't read everyone's responses so sorry if some is repeated.

I too am frugal, but here's a thought:

You COULD NOT PAY ME to get an SUV now with the price of gas so high (maybe lower right now than it was, but it won't be for long and it is still significantly more if it is for an SUV).  If an SUV is your only mode of transportation, there is no cheaper option for when gas prices go up.

Also, if you are driving 7 miles often (work and back), and it is not highway, the SUV will have horrible gas mileage.

I'd keep the one car and if after a few months you find you need another, then buy a cheap used car that will be good for the few times you need it.

Here are a couple of more tidbits since your DH is so concerned about maintenance costs.  According to Goodyear, the average age of a car in the US is 6.7 years.  Average annual maint cost is $780.  $780 won't make very many car payments.

I know that Toyota (at least here) has what they call "certified Toyotas" and sometimes you can snag an "almost" new car for used car prices.  We got one a few years back - they couldn't sell it as new because it had been used as a loaner for people who were having their cars worked on - but we bought it with only 700 miles on it.  For a Toyota, 700 miles is nothing.
