PetSafe Infra-Red Door

    PetSafe Infra-Red Door

Does anyone use the PetSafe dog door?  I go home for lunch
to give the dog a break but a door would save about $60/month
on gas.  I just finished trenching my fence and my gate locks
so I feel he will be safe.   Before I ruin my door I have lots of questions.

Does the door lock fast enough to keep the cats from following
    the dog out?
Is it really strong enough to keep the cats in?  I have a large Persian
who would love to sneak out.
Has anyone had problems with the motor breaking?
How often do you have to change the batteries?
Is it hard to install?  Does it come with a cutting template?
I would need the large.  Could a person crawl through the hole?

    Thanks

I think that if the dog laid near it, the cat could open it (if the cat is comfortable going near the dog. You could just put cat fencing in your yard, but I don't know how well that works, not having cats.

If a person crawls through your dog door, they deserve whatever they get from your dog. How big is the large sized one? We had that discussion on here, once. It was decided that it'd have to be a pretty small person, for most doggy doors.

We looked into them, but our cat would learn very quickly how to follow the dog out the door. She's comfortable with being underfoot, and she's sneaky smart. [:D]

Size of dog doors: I housesat for some people with a Dalmation, and I used the dog door to get in the house when I locked myself out once. I'm smallish (5'5"/125) and it was a tight fit, but it was totally do-able.

The PetSafe door we have (for the bathroom door for our cat) is very easy to install, but it's not hte infrared one. Don't know if that's harder.

My back yard is pretty small, it's enclosed with a 6 foot privacy fence.  My dog doesn't like to go out back (it's boring) so I think he would only go out when necessary.  The dog next door isn't cat friendly so I can't risk letting the cats out. I would have to cut a hole in my laundry room door which unfortunately is right next to the litterbox.  I'm sure they will notice it..
I haven't found this brand in stores so I don't know how big it is.
Other brands are 50 to 80 lbs.  My family has an extra large door and adults can get in. I don't live in the best neighborhood and so if it's too big I will have to forget about the idea.
I will look for the previous discussion.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Does anyone have the link to this infra-red door? I've seen other pet doors online, but haven't been able to find this one. Is it only supposed to open for dogs, not cats? If so, that sounds like what I would need, because I don't want my cat to get outside but the dogs would love to be able to run out there whenever they wanted.

There's a thingy they wear on their collar. It opens when the thingy is near it. Otherwise, it's locked.

At least, I think that's how it works.

Jennie, I just found the discussion you told me about.
Thanks, it answers some of my questions.

Loki's mom...The dog wears a remote control magnetic key on his collar that unlocks the door.  Dog.com has an example in the doors & gate section.
