Typical American Values?

    Typical American Values?

I have to socially analyze a typically American value, belief or worldview for my Cross Cultural Studies of Socialization class... Identify the value, discuss in what ways the value is socialized, identify the effect of this value on an individuals identity, and contemplate the effect on society...

I was thinking of using the value of choice.... but.... I was hoping to come up with something a little more original....

    Any ideas?

But, for my assignment, I chose success, as it is one that is (pretty) universal as an American (as a whole) value... and easy to deconstruct in terms of how it is socialized, and what its implications are for the individual and society.

But.... any input would still be appreicated and welcomed!

I'm going to say *accountability, committment and tolerance*.  I'd like to say *cleanliness* but that one is getting to be a real problem for me - between the dust and the dog hair ....

Independence is the MAIN American value. We are far less communally motivated than just about any other culture. You could contrast us with the Japanese, for instance, or with a tribal culture.

Anything along the lines of self-reliance, independence, or (not on the list) individualism are what I always think of as the quintessential American values.

You read my mind, jeano.  Americans are individualists, if nothing else.  It's not always a bad thing, as I think it has led to much in the way of invention and innovation.
