Cars that sit in the sun all day

Just noticed that my 00 Jeep Grand Cherokee has some paint deterioration on the back corner where the afternoon sun hits it.  DH is going to take it in tomorrow to have it looked at, but just wondering if anyone has experience and knows if the whole side of the car might be going as well, but we can't see it yet.

That's interesting.  When we bought our house in '79 we couldn't park in the garage because it was full of junk (some ours, some the previous owner's). After 12 years of never being able to park inside, we had the garage converted to a room and we still couldn't park there, but we've never had any problems with the paint on a car ... and we've been known to have some pretty brutal summers here.

Now I may be completely off base here, so anyone can correct me if I'm wrong....

I believe this problem varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.. depends on the paint quality. Some manufacturers cheap out and this causes deterioration or oxidation of the paint.

I think the best thing you can do is buy car wax (even turtlewax from walmart) and spend a couple hours waxing the thing. Its a horrible strain on the arms, but will protect the exterior of the vehicle.

Again, I'm not too smart with cars... so anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

I've heard that the Jeep Cherokees have had paint problems in the late 90's and a little later.  I think my brother-in-law had problems with his.  It could just be that the existing paint problem is exacerbated by the sun in that particular spot.

I had a Jeep Cherokee (Laredo) and had major problems with the paint.  Mine was silver and what happened is that it started to look like it was oxidizing on the engine hood and several other places.  The Jeep dealer admitted it was a problem with the paint and they repaired the problem areas.  Unfortunately, they didn't repaint the entire car, so soon after, the other areas started doing the same thing.  Mine was an older model than yours, but it'd be worth checking with the dealer.  You might also google "problems with Jeep Cherokee paint" and see if you can find some more information.

I had a used Dodge Caravan whose hood and roof were peeling badly. Once I got the car I noticed almost every early 90s Caravan I saw had the paint peeling off the hood and/or roof... I talked to someone who had one and they said it was a problem with the primer coat on that model. Googling for similar problems sounds like it might be helpful....

Also check with the manufacturer.Sometimes cars that have problems develop with certain shades will recall them to be re-painted.

After googling it, I did find some were recalled immediately for repainting due to defective primer.  DH got an estimate of $375 (it's only along 1 side of the back window), but the gal said the Jeep had been repainted at some point.  We bought it at 1 year old and only 7,000 miles, so I guess we got one of those Jeeps.  The rest of the paint looks great....
