One Eyed Dogs

My maltese had his right eye removed last year due to benign melanoma and secondary glaucoma.

He occasionally bumps into things etc on that side, and get a little upset that he didnt see the object and doesnt understand why.

Today I was walking him with some other people and dogs, and he got underfoot and I scolded him (sort of) to watch what he was doing. Afterwards I realised that he got underfoot on his blind side and couldnt see.

I feel terrible, poor little baby. I forgot that he couldnt see.

Does anyone else have a dog with only one eye that would like to discuss these particular issues.

My girl Shari had only one eye for the 1 1/2 years of her life. It was removed at age 14. They do adapt amazingly well. Sometimes we as people have a harder time watching them compensate (and sometimes bump into things) than they actually do.

It is easy to forget at times, especially at first. I never made a huge deal out of it, but if I sensed she was nervous about something on her blind side, then I'd put myself between "it" and her, letting her see me first, then she'd go about her business.

You can't always be a buffer for them, but I think if you make a huge deal out of the mishap, they might be more likely to be nervous and upset about encountering a situation again.

Your little guy will be fine - really!

I once met a dog with no eyes. He got around amazingly well. Really cool little dog.

I've known quite a few one eyed dogs (I know a lot of dogs, LOL). Just like three legged dogs, I've always been amazed at how well they adapt.

My parents have a 16year old Peke with only one eye, and a cataract on the other. She doesn't see too well, but will still run after a tennis ball, if it's thrown on her "seeing" side.

I also know a Collie that has very limited vision, but to look at him you'd never know he couldn't see like a champ. He makes his way around to his favorite people and knows exactly which pocket is the treat pocket.

The adjustment required for the dog can be a bit stressful, so expect him to stay close to you on his blind side. You're his security in that direction.

My friend had a one eyed dog and her dog kept running into her garage wall and always looked puzzled after doing it.

I also worked on an old collie he has one eye removed and the other eye was blind. I felt bad after I learned that since he always hit his head on my groom table getting on the table. No matter what I did for him. He was very sweet old guy.

Yeah my dog always looks confused when he runs into things on his blind side too.

Ill be very upset if anything ever happens to his remaining eye. I feel sorry for blind dogs, it must be very confusing for them not to be able to see and not know why.

My little Jack was born with one eye. (His name is Jack of Hearts, that's a one eyed jack)

I almost never notice any effect from it except that if I'm on his blind side he has to turn his head farther to look at me. That was more evident when he had the cone-head (due to hip surgery). I think you can see that in these pictures.

I think that he probably does better than dogs who lose an eye later in life because he has had no eye from the beginning he doesn't know he's compensating. (He thinks all the other poor dogs have an extra eye, just in case.)

though its a big deal for us... its not a big deal for a dog... dont obsess or go crazy when ur dog does something cause his blindside... your dog doesnt care that he is missing one eye... might not even know he is... except his vision will be impaired and he/she will adapt....

dogs dont know the concept of being sad or mad because they lost an eye or for any reason... they just live however they are and can be happy as long as the owner lets them and the owner doesnt make a big deal out of it..

My little Frankie lost his eye last week due to an accident. He's a shitzu/yorkie mix. I want to keep the other eye protected. Does anyone know is doggles are worth trying?
