    Volunteer Transport

I've got a dog that needs to be transported from Georgia to Maine and need to know how much time to allow for drivers to sign up.  Would two weeks be enough or should I set the date a month from now?  Any suggestions welcome.

where in Maine? If you can hold off a month I'm going to Portland on August 24th. I can get the dog from central NH toward the Portland area.

You would be surprised how quickly people will act in an emergency, so setting a time limit might be variable for you.

Personally, I'd recruit individuals in the rescue and show circuits.  Find people you know along the route and explain you'd like to get the dog up w/in 2 weeks.  It's more difficult this time of year because of summer vacations.  Good luck to you!
What kind of dog is it, and what's the circumstances?  I know folks who do transport in the New England/North East area.

Sorry, it's actually going to Massachusetts.  I feel stupid.  Sorry about that.

We are transporting a four month old puppy to her new forever home.  She was born into rescue and is a basset hound/jack russell mix.  She is dark brown and oh so cute.  She got really depressed when her brother was adopted, but is now as energetic as ever.  She stole everyone's heart and then found an adopter.  We try not to get attached, but then we have a sweet little puppy like Nala.  You can see her on [linkhttp://muttsoflove.tripod.com/]http://muttsoflove.tripod.com/[/link]
This is my first time coordinating a transport, so wish me luck.

PM me if you need help in MA...  I am in Boston and if I am around, I am happy to help...  I have no idea how long it would take though...  It will probably depend on how far each leg is willing to drive...

Well, if I'm able I would be willing to help out.  I'm in RI and could easily go from RI to MA with no trouble.

Generally, with gas prices and summer commitments being what they are, I try to limit transfers that are within a 6 hour drive to break them into 2-hour driving blocks.  (You have to imagine these folks have to drive from home to the drop off and back, so that's 4 hours of driving.)
However, where you have a long haul from GA to MA, if you find someone who's doing the show circuit and can take her along the way, that's great.  Breed clubs might be a good connector source of names you can contact, if you have an in with them.  Since she's a small baby, that will be even EASIER to find transporters.  Maybe you could even hook up with another rescue that does similar long-distance transports.  There's a group in Maine called Almost Home that goes to Arkansas, I believe.  If they can't add your pup to the transport, they might know individuals along the way who can help.  Check out:http://www.almosthomerescue.net/
