Nonnie Belly pics-Day 55

I really hope that I can be more involved with the birthing process with Rose's next litter.  She is a velcro dog and definitely likes me much more than puppies.  Although, once they were a day old, then she became a great mom.  She was ok, with my mentor, but I couldn't be in the room or else she would just jump around trying to get to me.
I'll cross my fingers for all girls and some red/white ones!  But, now that is said, the best one in the litter will be a male!  Thats how it works!

Swinging or shaking down...is when you rest the puppy on your palm...wrapped in a towel, right when it comes out....the head is pointing towards your fingers and "clamshell style", with your other hand FIRMLY holding the pup, you swing them from ceiling to floor in a quick, short arc. It's not as terrifying as it sounds. Basically you want to use centrifugal(sp?) force to bring all the crud and mucous from deeper in the throat and nose OUT. The baby bulb syringe can only get so much out on it's own. Leftover mucous poses a real threat to trigger pnuemonia later on which is baaaaaad juju in new pups. This is why in the old days they'd hold babies upside down...lol...using gravity to help drain the mucous.

The Delee trap is a medical device that uses suction from the mouth thru a tube and into a canister or bag...up another tube that is IN the puppy's nose or mouth to suction out more deeply. You do not get what it's the nose at mouth in your mouth BTW...it goes into said bag...the two tubes do not connect [;)] I gave one of the pups a small hernia myself swinging last time..I held the puppy but the placenta went flying and pullled the belly button a bit....my bad. SO! This time I plan to avoid that, lol.

OH MY GOSH[sm=blush.gif]!  You REALLY have to know what you are doing with dogs birthing, don't you?  I had no idea.  I simply had no idea.  WOW!  Well, certainly I hope/pray that you have better luck with the Delee trap than with the swing method.  Man oh days.  Good luck though and I truly pray all puppers are healthy with a couple red and whites as you want[;)]!

OH that would be marvelous!  I don't know why I'm so interested.  I guess having given birth myself 3 times I just wonder about this end of it all.  OH PLEASE let him take a video if possible.  Fantastic vibes and many prayers for a successful delivery!  I'm just anxious to see how many she has and hope they are all well.  She is lucky she has you.  You sound so very experienced!  Going home from work now so see you all tomorrow in the thread!  Keep us updated, Gina!  This SO great!

Oh, Gina, I am getting so excited. Susan I'm just like you I love to learn about this stuff and Gina is a great teacher.
Oh Nonnie, my girl I feel your pain woman!
Gina what do you do to keep close if she has them in the middle of the night?

Deb, the whelping room is also the kids playroom. In the pic below you can see a door to the right of the closet? That goes directly to the master bathroom and our bedroom...a straight shot.

The little blue couch there....folds out to around a twin size bed, I'll put some sheets and blankets there for myself. Not PERFECT but much better than the chair or the floor...which is tile with an area rug over most of it. The whelping box itself is in the closet...surrounded by an ex pen w/door. during the whelp the entire ex pen is open as I need easy access, the little white shelf unit will be pulled out and place to the left along the wall...again..more room in the actual closet and easy access to the items on the shelf.

As I and Nonnie both feel more comfy I will move back to our bed..which is thru that door. I can hear Nonnie snore at night thru the door when it's closed...so I figure I will have a nice easy time listening for any issues or weird squeaks in the coming weeks.

It's not a perfect set up but I like it. The kids don't use their playroom for much more than toy storage...they grab something and go elsewhere to play...lol! We'd planned to use it later on as an office/study...but dog room sounds good to me too! [;)]

Oh how awesome, Gina!  I have heard of people also using kid's swimming pools too but I am sure that is a compromise on space.  This is SO interesting.  I SO wish I could be there.  Thank you for the invite tho!  This is marvelous to share this with you.  I know we ALL feel this way!
