Lots 'O Sgt. Butter pics! He's getting BIG!

Thought it was time for another Sgt. Butter update. [:D]

He's almost 11 weeks old now, and he is MASSIVE. He last weighing was last Saturday at the vet, and he was 22 pounds...and he's grown since then, so he probably weighs a little bit more. But 22 pounds at 10 weeks!! Geez! [sm=eek.gif]

He's been to the vet three times now, and everything always checks out just fine. He has a slightly unusually high pulse rate, which I've noticed myself and the vet has always commented on, but they say that other than the actual heartrate, his heart sounds fine so they don't think it's anything to worry about at this point.

He's super smart and super trainable- In the last few days I've taught him "sit," "speak," "lie down," and "stay." He usually understands what I want him to do after only 3 or 4 tries, and from there it's just a matter of gettingn him to do it reliably- since he's pretty big on exploring and he gets tired of hearing me bark commands at him after 10 minutes or so.

His only really bad habit at this point is rushing the door when it's opened. We're working on it, and he's getting much better already, but there are times when he just can't resist and guiltily tries to get outside.

His recall is surprisingly good outdoors. Doing any training outside is difficult since he's SO interested in his environment, but he comes when called pretty much without fail. He may poke a bit, and make it clear that he doesn't want to, but he comes. [:D]

He loves pulling, so I've been introducing him to the basics of springpole and starting to develop his bite- nothing major until he's about 18 months, but I want him to at least have the basics down. I've also been introducing him to a harness, and letting him drag empty soda bottles around, since I'd like to do weight pulling with him when he's old enough, as long as he checks out okay healthwise.. If not competitively (I'm not sure if dogs have to be registered or not to compete, I think they do) then at least at home as a fun pastime and to keep him in shape. I'm also considering MAYBE doing some bitework with him, but I really need to research it more before making a decision on that.

    So anyway, pictures!

I tried to get one of him pulling, but every time I picked up the camera he dropped the toy. Figures. [8D]

Those are SO adorable!  I love the 6th one down where Pepito is grabbing St. Butter... Brings to mind - "CONFESS, CONFESS, I TELL YOU... CONFESS!"  So cute!  The first picture is framable tho!

Very cute! he's is growing...but gosh Akita pups are that weight when they go home at 8 weeks lol. But If you live with a Chi...lol size is relative. He is a very sweet puppy...are you still placing him or is he no longer a foster? I probably missed it somewhere and you already answered....

Very true...I've been around ADULT dogs who were really big most of my life, but most of the puppies I've been around have been small-medium breeds. I'm just not used to seeing puppies that are that big at such a young age!

It's a relief though to know that he probably won't get Akita size- since I suspect he's part mastiff, I was worried about him getting rediculously huge. The fact that he's considerable smaller than an Akita puppy makes me feel much better about his size!

Oooh I decided within a few days of getting him that I could never part with him. I've always loved pits and pit mixes, and have wanted one my WHOLE life, so it just seems like fate. Not to mention, his personality meshes with mine totally- he's so easy to get along with, he's not afraid of anything, and he's just a joy to train and be around in general. Like I siad, I've wanted a pit my whole life....watching him grow up, I see him slowly turning into my absolute dream dog. Plus, he gets along with the other dogs well, and even Pepito, who hates the world, loves him. He's definitely here for good. [:D]

the size thing really hits you when you breed lol.

My last Beagle pups were between 7-8ozs at birth.

My Akita friend had a litter around the same time and they were TWO POUNDS a piece at birth...OMG! my Beagle pups were not 2lbs for weeeeeks...lol!

He is just gorgeous!  As for size we adopted Bugsy at about 14-15 weeks old and he as 35lbs - he is coming up to 18 mos old now and he generally weighs between 95 & 97 lbs.  He is a leaner build than Sgt Butter but might help 'size' him weight wise
pic is of him a week after we got him
