First duck

    First duck

I took Hawk on his first duck hunt yesterday and he did great.  At first it was like "hey why are we getting up at 4am?"  It wasn't until we were walking down the dike that he realized that there were birds everywhere, he even pointed a decoy along the way.  In the beginning he was annoyed that there were birds all around but he had to be tied up and be quiet.  Then the shooting started and he got jazzed up. When I finally hit a duck I sent him for his first duck retrieve ever. His first instinct was the run down the dike.  So I called him back lined him up and sent him toward the water.  He ran out there searched and found it near the tullies then brought it back proudly.  I am so proud of my now official versatile hunting dog.

Good job, Hawk. You're such a smart boy ! Neat pictures. I am wondering ... Ontario, 4 am ... how cold was it !?

    Good job, Hawk!!!

We were near the Salton Sea.  The wind was blowing a bit but not too bad.  Hawk doesn't have much body fat  so jumping in the water and sitting there in the wind is chilly for him.  He loved it though but couldn't understand why we weren't trying to get the shore birds.  I think he will actually make a fine duck dog.

    Great job, Hawk!

Wasn't it his right ear that got cut up recently? It looks like it has healed up very nicely.

Yup it sure was that ear and you would never know until you feel the bit of scar tissue on the inside of the ear.  I got a total of 3 ducks that day and I am frying them up tonight like chicken fingers.  So I guesss they would be called duck fingers.
