Working Dogs

June's learning to use her eye now and very shortly will be able to settle sheep like Cord can do (when he behaves. )

Do they know or learn this instinctively or do you train it?

I find it fascinating and heartwarming to watch dogs doing the job they were bred to do.  Great pics!!

Very interesting. I agree Cakana I love to see dogs, doing the activities they were bred for. They seem real happy when they get to do their jobs or have job.

They can either push or work them from further back - pups try both. We just say, "That's not it" when they try to push without eye, and let them work when they do it right. So we are simply selecting appropriate behavior - it has to be there to bring out, however. Without training most of them would just chase, since it's the most intrinsically rewarding. [;)]

Great photos, and I had no idea that eyeing the sheep makes them calmer! Cord is drop dead gorgeous! He's breathtaking, I just only try to imagine what he looks like not on film.

I love all of your dog's miens of self confidence and happiness, and June is just so girly! Rocky looks like he'll be quite the eyecatcher in a couple more months too!
