The smooth is just a variety of Collie.  They are the same as the rough except for the hair. (The AKC does not differentiate between the two varieties on their registration, it just says "Collie").  They are double coated, so they will shed, but it's not as "invasive" as the rough's hair.  Rough collie hair weaves into fabric and can outlive a nuclear blast. lol Smooth hair brushes off your clothes and furniture easily, although it does constantly reproduce.
