    Good News For Me

When I was taken to the hospital Sept. 7, my kidney value was 8%, which is transplant or death.  My blood pressure was 70/40, so they worked all night and the next morning to get it up.  The doctor put a PERMANENT dialysis catheter in my chest  I had 4 rounds of dialysis in 5 days (is usually 3 in 7 days).  A biopsy was done.  On my 11th day in hospital the doctor came in with a smile.  My kidney number ws had been coming up and the biopsy showed my kidneys were regenerating.  I left the hospital the next day with a number of 26%  and no catheter!

Nine days later it was up to 33%.  I had another blood work done 3 weeks ago and it was up to 45%.  So it has been going up.  Hope it continues.  Only problem, since it was the metformin that caused the kidney failure I had to come off it and go onto Glipizide, and my Januvia was cut in half so my blood sugar is running higher than it did before.

I'm glad your kidneys are still improving; that was so scary!!! Sorry about your blood sugar rising because of the change in meds. I'm not familiar with managing the blood sugar in diabetes; does avoiding foods with sugar help?

    That's great news Sandra.

As far as the blood sugar, you know what you need to do, balancing your carbs and protein.  I found with my DH that on meds and blood sugar very well controlled, he tends to stray from his dietary plan.  It's easy to do, but critical to adjust your diet and monitor your levels.

Good news, Sandra!  I know from family members who have to take lots of different medications to manage chronic diseases and conditions that some of them can really have some nasty side effects -- from inconvenient to deadly.  I'm glad they found an alternative medicine for you.  As the others said, dietary monitoring is as important as medications, but boy I know it's hard to do.  It sure would be nice if we could just turn our taste buds OFF when we need to avoid certain foods that are bad for us!
