Jackie - thank you so much. I cried my way into work this morning. I always do. At that time Monica Segal and I both wrote for AllPets .I was asked to do an article on what needs there were for the SAR dogs and NY pets in distress. I got to know several people who were both at Ground Zero and in Washington. Hearing them speak to me on the phone ... hearing the fatigue in their voices & yet their determination to keep on.
A lot of people never knew that there were many buildings *near* Ground Zero that were also evacuated ... and pets left behind (people literally not able to get back up to their apartment to GET their pets) and the rescuers who went in to find everything from dogs/cats to goldfish and iguanas. Mostly just cops and firefighters volunteering even more time just to help those displaced and worried sick about their animals.
I can never ever forget them and what they did. It changed ALL our lives so much. No, we must never forget the price so many many paid.
