Julie -- use a pair of light cotton gloves .. OR get a pair of those gloves on the cosmetics aisle that take off rough skin??. Those, in particular, are helpful hanging onto a wet dog!!
Just use soap and lather your hands (with gloves on) like you're washing your hands. Then you literally just wash her face with your hands -- no disconnect between holding something IN your hand and trying to get it on the dogs face.
Baking soda when combined with soap becomes a HUGE degreaser. so ... is she's rolled in something greasy (like auto oil) it's great -- but it will super strip all the oils from her coat otherwise. It's not toxic- just really hard on the coat.
That close to the eyes you'll likely be best off to use either plain old baby shampoo or something super super mild like Kirklands Coco Castile (usually sold as a bar soap at the grocery store like way down on the bottom shelf). But with gloves it is EASY to give them a bath with bar soap cos you just "wash your hands" with the bar and that makes the lather.
Sorry Abbie -- don't mean to rat you out and give Mom instructions on a ((gag)) bath!! I mean that's no fun, right??
HOWEVER -- secret weapon no. 22 -- when dealing with a dog who is completely insane in the bath??? before you start take a ziplock sandwich bag -- put something in that is STICKY and yummy -- honey & peanut butter, gravy & mashed potato -- whatever you got!!
Before you start the bath ... snip just a tiny corner off the bottom corner. When you start the bath -- (gloves on? Ok!!) take the baggie in your gloved hands and smear your sticky stuff on the edge of the tub somewhere near where you want her head to be!! Lots of squiggles ... will give you lots of time to wash her face and ... rinse it.
This can make a bath very attractive .... and she WILL clean your tub sparkling clean for you LOL.
