DNA TEST RESULTS

    DNA TEST RESULTS

Ok, I went ahead and did the Wisdom DNA test on Freida, and I got my results today.

They estimate her adult weight to be 38 - 40 pounds (she is 52 pounds at 7 months already), and one of her three key breeds is New Foundland.  Not sure on this, have to really read it through.

Has anyone done this test with their dog?

People often post about it with ... usually semi-comical results.  Like a 7 month dog already being "bigger" than she should be mature?

In the ones I've seen, some of the breeds come out a bit whacko --

I know those tests are pricey ... I really hope it shows you something sensible and valuable.

I've always been skeptical of those tests in the past but doing some reading here and there has turned up some interesting articles on the subject.  Here's an article I found very interesting and it does explain why sometimes people get such seemingly odd results.  Look at page three specifically.  It's not as simple as we would like to believe such as this dog is mixed with this and this and this.  Food for thought for all of us who own mixes of unknown parentage.

*Casting eye on hound mix* -- I've always thot that was pretty ... um ... descriptive.  If my suspicions were correct it's far more succinct than listing the 47 different types of hounds and "huntin dawgs" I'm pretty sure may muddy the waters.

I've has a zillion mixes ... but she's the only one I've ever had that I figured absolutely "for sure" that all of her ancestors were led by their noses and howled, bayed & aroooooooooooooo'd at the moon and then whined about everything else.

I'm laughing at my dog, not at anyone else (and I do a whole LOT of laughing at her!)

However ... all kidding aside, had that test existed back when I had my Prissy, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

I wanted to post a follow up to this thread.  After I recieved my results on the DNA test, I questioned them, contacting the company and asked a few questions and told them their results confused me.  One big issue was the adult weight they predicted and the fact that Freida has Newfoundland in her.

So, at their request and my agreeing, I sent them several pictures of Freida, now mind you they did not have a picture of her originally, they only knew her weight, sex and if she was spayed.  Now they have everything and they are suppose to get back to me with a more narrowed result.  (I know this is not how the testing is suppose to go, but if these people are at all professional, and if the DNA data base isn't enough to narrow it down, the pictures should give me a right on answer (guess).  I have nothing to lose since I already invested my expense in the project.  (the thing I know for sure right now, is Freida is wrapped around our hearts no matter what she is made up of!)

I think her tail looks like a monkeys!

I have done this test with three of my dogs.  The results were pretty unbelieveable with the exception of Chief.

Dori:  Wisdom Panel said Lab Mix with Corgi Mix

Chief (black dog): Wisdom Panel says German Pinscher Mix mixed with Siberian Husky Mix

Finn (white dog): Wisdom Panel says Rottweiler Mix mixed with Staffordshire Mix (This one made me really laugh!)

Georgie, thank you for posting, it is interesting isn't it.

I know alot of people look at this as a waste of money, but since I had already spent the money I am now just curious what they come back with after they review the DNA and the pictures of her.  It may help their system of doing this in the future for others.

Whatever is is Freida is turning out to be a good dog, just wonder where her smart eyes come from.  Your fur family is wonderful.
