    4 weeks post op Bugsy

some video from today's walk - he's been doing about 1.5 miles in the morning and about 1/2 mile in the evening

Finally skipping Rimadyl some days and overall we are having a harder time keeping him from doing silly things so I guess he feels better

The limp is still very visible but from what I can tell there isn't a lot of pain

The surgeon said the limp may be visible for 3-4 months :(

Bless his heart, looks like he is doing really well.  So glad for him and you.

That is great, loved the vid!  Yes the limp is still noticeable, but to me it seems much less than it was the last vid you shared.

I'm curious, if you skip the Rimadyl some days, do you find the limp to be more pronounced on days with out it?  The fact that you say he seems to have little to no pain makes me think that no, the limp does not change w/ the medicine.  That IS good news right there!

Sandy that is correct - the limp is there, period. It does get better or worse but again from the best I can tell it is from muscle exhaustion not a pain response. BUT Bugsy isn't great at showing pain. Keep in mind when he snapped that piece off his elbow he never yelped!

I am nervous to stop the rimadyl but nervous about continuing its use. I think we could stop completely and be fine but I worry that the inflammation would return or that his progress would be limited so I keep using it.

Tonight I just gave him a tramadol (pure pain relief) as I know he'll be out cold instead of being a trouble maker. He truly hates missing any opportunity to drive us nuts LOL

Thanks Auburn, dogs are amazing creatures. Poor B has been through the knee surgery and now this and each time he is only difficult to keep down, not to keep him moving. Humans more often than not are hard to keep moving after orthopedic surgeries

I love the "Flying Nun Ears!"  Big Smile

Hey, if you didn't know he had surgery, his "limp" would just look like he's a guy trying to look cool with a special walk -- I'm reminded of that scene from the Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor movie (Stir Crazy), when they go to prison and walk around saying, "We bad, uh-huh, we bad."  Like this:

I like how Bugsy's "cool walk" is perfectly timed with the beat of the music!

So, what causes a limp to linger for 3 - 4 months, even after there's no more pain?  Just general weakness?  I suppose the muscle has atrophied a bit.  Regardless - he looks great!

I am not sure but in this case I believe yes part to do with atrophy, that leg really atrophied from mid Feb through surgery but is coming back now.

And also due to the cutting of the tendon that attaches the biceps muscle to the shoulder joint, he is learning how to use that muscle a different way now.

I chose the music Hurts like Heaven because it doesn't matter how bad it hurts, getting out for a walk to see people and dogs and smell things is heaven for Mr B

Bugsy, it's good to see you healing so well! Karen, continued good luck trying to keep him in rehab mode. I just don't think that's on his agenda!
