My husband is a member of the "I buy things I want when I want them" club, too. I rarely buy him gifts (or we use house-related purchases as our mutual gifts -- like this year's new carpeting). If he wants something, he gets it, and he'd never think of waiting until it went on sale. And, in many cases, he has to have "the best" of something, when other less expensive brands would be just as good, if not better. Example: he has to have Filson wool shirts, no other wool or flannel shirt will do. I could buy 5 shirts/blouses for what he pays for 1 of those, but I am a true bargain hunter.
I think your dinner out to celebrate, Sharon, is a very suitable "gift" for each other. That's what we do for birthdays and anniversaries. Not cooking is a big gift for me!
I'm not in the candy-giving mood either, but we'll try it tonight to see how Ruby is. We pretended we weren't home last year, but this year she may be calmer. If not, we'll abandon it and turn off all the lights. It's been pouring rain most of the day, so I bet we have few kids. On dry Halloweens, we've had dozens of kids -- they get dropped off in van-pools (I'm not kidding).
Karen, your Mom sounds like my Mom. Last year when they lost power for 5-6 days from the snow storm, she toughed it out with her neighbors just fine -- they shared snacks and newspapers and conversation in one apartment to pass the time. It must be that hardy New England/Northeastern stock!
