    Luke's Flyball Debut!

Luke ran his first flyball tournament today, and he has two ribbons to prove it!

A month or two ago, the other team that practices with us asked if they could use him in a tournament in September. Back then, he wasn't really ready to go, he wasn't catching the ball well on our team's box, and he had never raced before. I said he could go, but he would be unreliable. So, they passed on him for that tournament. Fast forward a few weeks, they asked on a Yahoo group for an extra dog for today's tournament and one next month. I knew they only had 4, and a team can have 6. So, I figured I might as well ask if he can just run the warmups with them, since he was still having trouble on our team box, and his speed was borderline too slow for their team (they needed a dog that runs 6 seconds or less, he can run 6 seconds, by himself, when he runs perfect). We discussed at practice last week, and I left not knowing if he would get warmups at all, and we thought if he did and he did well, then he'd  maybe run a few heats (each individual race is a heat, each time your team goes out is a race, if I have that right) but only on the left. He turns to the left, so if he misses the ball, he's safe not to cross over to the other lane, because it just goes into the barrier. He ran warmups, and the first race was on the right lane, so I thought that was it for him, until our next race, which would be in the left lane. Then, just as the first heat was about to start, I heard someone from the team giving the line up to one of the judges. I found out he was running that race when she pointed to him and said, "4". WHAT?! I found the spot where I was sending him from, and got ready. I know in the first race, we had some mistakes. He missed the ball and ran past a few of the jumps. I honestly don't remember whether he ran the first heat clean or not. I do remember the first time he went down and caught his ball, I knew it meant he was going to run it clean, so I was celebrating before he was even back to me. We both had a pretty good time. He chased a Border Collie down the lane once, one time he went to say hi to the judge, and one time I  stopped running too soon,  and he stopped right before the line. But all in all, for his first time out and not knowing he was racing until seconds before hand, it was great.

Video to come I believe. He's the first dog from his class to run in a tournament, so the instructor was there taking videos of him.

    Hmm... what are these?

    It was exhausting.

He's running in a tournament next month with the same team he went with today. He was on an open team, which basically means the dogs can be from any team to run together. If they do well, he might be able to get his next title at that tournament. He got 100 something points today, and he needs 500 for the next title up. If the team runs in 24 seconds or less in a heat, the dogs get 25 points, so you can basically get that if you run your first heat clean. 28 seconds or less is 5 points, and under 32, you get 1 point.  This tournament was best 5 out of 5 heats, so technically, you could have that second title he got all in that first race if you run 4/5 good races. He didn't get that. We only had 4 races, and he got that some time during the 3rd or 4th race. The speeds of the dogs on the team mean they'd all have to run clean, and we'd have to pass pretty tight to get the 25. I think when we got 25 points, we were like, 23.5-23.9. In class, once I let go of him, I don't really watch him at all. I just listen for him to hit the box, call him and run. Today I was watching him and making sure he took the first jump on the way back, and I didn't keep running as far because I needed to make sure I caught him. So, he slowed down a bit on the way back. Next time we'll both be more confident, we'll practice passing (he had to run last today because he doesn't know how, and when a dog had to rerun, I basically had to tackle him) and he'll get to practice during single dog racing on Friday night.

No problem. I actually went and took those photos where you could actually see his ribbons so I could send something to his breeder.

Well done, Luke!  You and your Mom did good!

That first picture is so cute -- what an adorable face he has.  Oh, and I like the ones of him on the sheets or blanket with his "namesake."  Wink

I have to ask -- in that first photo, does he have string tied on his ears?  Is it to keep them out of his face while in the race?  Maybe I'm seeing things!

In the first pic, I hung his ribbons from his ears.

Oh, duh!  Now I see them!  I didn't notice them when I first looked!  Embarrassed

    and he knows it.

Here's a video of him from Sunday. This is most of his heats, but the first race wasn't filmed. This is edited down a bit with most of the other dogs running before him removed.

The dog running before him most of the times, when it's a man releasing the dog, is also relatively new to racing. The others have been doing it for a while.
