My email was hacked. I am not in Spain.

Hi guys, just dropping in here because I know some of you aren't on Facebook.  But, a lot of you are in my personal contacts/address book.

My email was hacked yesterday, and some a$$hat blasted an email out to my entire address book.  The mail cited that I was in Spain and got mugged and was asking that people help by sending me 1850 Euro.

    Good Grief.

I spent about an hour on the phone with ATT yesterday, to get it all squared away.  They contend it was a virus.  I'm not convinced its just a virus.  An IT friend of mine had an email exchange with the criminal.  How can a virus do that?

Anyway, if you get an email from me (Barbara Henslee)...either delete or forward to Abuse@ATT.com.

I hope all is well with you all.

Also...you all may remember my talking about my sister in law a year or so ago having a terrible struggle with COPD.  She passed away on Thursday, 10/4.

Tough year me for me...I hope 2013 is better.

That scam seems to be a fairly common one.  Sorry you got hacked.  :(   Saw your FB post about it.  Interesting that the scam artist said Spain since you were there not too long ago.  Scary how much of our lives is now out there for anyone to see and exploit.

Yes, you've been through a lot this past year and I hope you have nothing but good things in store for the rest of this year and 2013.  How are you doing with your foot and walking?

I had some serious concerns when I got your email, but, honestly, it didn't sound like you.  I HOPED when I deleted it that it was a scam, so thank you for posting.

Well, I'm very happy to at least be able to have two shoes on.  And, to not have to rely on a scooter or cane.  Big Smile

I still wear the ankle stabilizer because the area is weak.   But, I'm able to get on the treadmill and start getting back to normal activities.  I have yet to get on the bike.  The most I've done is walk 1/2 mile going about 2 mph on the treadmill.  And, walking normally like shopping, etc.  I put on so much weight (something like 10-15 pounds); and getting that off is going to be a struggle.

Its my understanding that I won't be back to fully normal for about a year...so I expect that by next summer I'll be back to normal.  Whatever normal is.  Stick out tongue

I attended the funeral of a dear friend's husband last Friday and for the first time put on boots with about an inch heel.  That was hard...but manageable.

Back to the hacking.  The timing is rather suspicious too.  We had posted the obituary for my SIL and I went to that site to look at the obit and sign the memory book.  Then, literally minutes later...emails started going out.  Very odd.

The mail not sounding like ME is what most people said, thankfully.  I was seriously worried that someone WOULD think it was me and send money.  That, more than anything made me sick to my stomach.

One of my IT guys...that had the exchange with this "virus" asked what shape was the mirror that we gave him.  The virus answered:  It was a triangle, now please hurry and send me the money.  Indifferent  The mirror was Texas shaped, btw.

Barbara, thanks for posting this and I'm really glad you're not in Spain - mugged.  Something just sounded "off" about the whole thing and the first thing that crossed my mind was that if it was legit, you would have posted on the forum and not sent hundreds of individual e-mails. Earlier in the week I had an odd e-mail, supposedly from Comcast, to the effect that something wasn't right with my payment and I had to log on to an address they sent within 48 hrs. to straighten it out or lose services.  I checked my bank statement and could see that the check I sent them had cleared and when I called them, they said it was spam and to delete it.  Then my son told me that if I had logged on to that site, they would have had access to my passwords. Indifferent Too bad these guys can't find a way to put their genius to better use.

That's always what I say, Joyce, when I hear these things, too.  There's no doubt these scammers are smart . . . imagine what they could accomplish if they put that kind of time and intellect into doing things with technology that help people instead of hurt them?

Barb, I'm glad no one in your email address book fell for the scam.  How frustrating!  Like someone said, it's weird they referred to Spain when you'd been there not that long ago.

I'm also sorry to hear about your SIL's death.  I hope the remainder of 2012 holds only positive things for you, including continued healing and increased mobility.  Thanks for checking in here for those of us not on FB --- it's nice to "see" you!

Barbara I get these kinds of emails all the time, but thanks for the warning.  It is good to see you. Sorry about you SIL.  Prayers to you and your family.

I am glad to see that you are getting back on track and I hope you will drop by more often :)

Thanks guys.  I appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

BTW...I decided not to do Secret Santa this year...but I do want to send out Christmas Cards.  Smile   Are we using the same list...or is someone sending out a revised mailing list?

    • Gold Top Dog

    Here you go Barb.

Kate and Deb are doing the card lists.
