    The piggies! NDR

You guys may have seen my piggy Karyn, but my mom brought home another little pig last month...just what we needed, another pet lol. But I love her and she keeps Karyn company when I'm busy. Here are the spoiled little pigs.

Here's an older picture from about a month ago

Anyone else have guinea pigs?! I'd love to see pics!

    Very cute!

Piggies are MARVELOUS!!!  A young friend of mine did piggie rescue for years.  She started getting her first pig from a snake food bin in a pet store.  Blossom was blind so they were selling her cheap as snake food.  Jenna decided that was "rescue" and took her home.  She trained Blossom just like a dog -- she used clicker training on her -- she even taught her to do piggie-sized weave poles and all sorts of agility stuff (yes, a blind piggie)

You made me think of it with the little tiara's in their hair!!  You go girl!!!  Fun isn't it??

Those photos are so adorable!  I love the little tiaras!  And their 2-level condo is impressive.  They're lucky piggies, indeed!

They are so cute; I love guinea pigs. The kids had some for pets when they were growing up and really enjoyed them.

It really is; they're very lucky indeed.

Their condo is quite impressive!  I don't know a thing about piggies - except that they are cute, lol.  Do they use a litter box / area, as a cat does?  Or do they just go when the urge occurs?

Karyn is very sweet, and the new one Tina looks like she settled in nicely!

    • Gold Top Dog
Thanks everyone! I'm proud of their condo, I built the whole thing myself including the fleece liners! I have 6 different fleece liners I change out every other day and wash them...it saves so much money in bedding, plus its so much cleaner and less stinky.

Do they use a litter box / area, as a cat does?  Or do they just go when the urge occurs?

They use it 90% of the time. When they're up on their top level eating sometimes they are lazy to go all the way back down to use their litter boxes so they go up there occasionally, and they leave some poops under their hidey houses, but other than that they're pretty good about it! It took a while for Tina to catch on...she's very messy compared to Karyn and I think she's the one peeing on the top level (plus she's the only one that will pee and poop when she's out of the cage. Karyn will hold it until she gets put away and she'll use the little box). Karyn taught herself within 2 days of having it in there!

     Interesting, that's great!

Give Tina some time, she's had lots of changes, she will catch on I suspect.

I think I need a long-haired piggy now. Do you brush them like a dog/cat? How are the doggies and kitties with them?

    • Gold Top Dog

*mental image of corgi herding guinea pigs* Tiffy -- it all depends on the personalities but you already have a cat right??  Piggies are rodents so that might not be a match made in Heaven - it all depends on the personalities involved.  Typically you need more than one tho -- they become very very bonded as a pair and tend not to like being alone.  But as you can see -- they can be extremely photo-genic! *smile*

Jenna had hers actually leash-trained and Blossom and Benny went everywhere with her.  They can really be pretty smart.  But just like dogs -- you gotta know what you're doing, and it looks like Corgi-chick has avoided the "must nots" -- in the type of stuff she has provided.  That's a nice condo!!  Like any other animal they can definitely be victims of bad-breeding (and not every vet does exotics either!)

I brush them weekly. Karyn is a Silkie so her hair is sleek and silkie (obviously lol) and doesn't tangle at all. Tina is a Peruvian and her hair is all over the place and gets tangled a lot easier.

The kitties are never in contact with my pigs and never will be because of the type of cage my piggies are in. I'm not going to risk anything happening to my pigs :). If the cage had a top I'd let my kitties get used to them in the cage (I'd never let them out with the kitties in my room). My kitties would get bored and just eventually ignore them like they did with our bird. They were interested for an hour or so and once they realized they couldn't get to it they backed off and don't look at him twice.

My dogs love the pigs tho, and the pigs love my dogs. Charlie will hop up on my bed occasionally and he just ignores them while they're running around him, he couldn't care less about the pigs. Karyn especially loves Atticus, probably since he's so tiny lol. Here's a video of Atticus and Karyn

Do they have an odor and how often do you clean their pen?

Do they have an odor and how often do you clean their pen?

I change out their litter pans and liners every 2 days. If I wait longer than that it starts to get a little stinky. When I just had Karyn I would clean it once a week and there was hardly an odor. But now with two piggies, and double the poop and pee, it gets stinkier faster so I change it frequently. They also need an occasional butt bath (if you get a long haired piggy) because their long hair will get gross from going potty. You just put an inch of warm water and babysoap in the bottom of a deep sink and wash their bottom then use a hair dryer to dry them completely so they don't get sick. It makes clipping their nails easier too because they're softer from soaking in warm water. I also trim the hair on my piggies bottoms and it helps a lot!
